Inleiding

Introduction

The TRANSFORMER BUILDING belonging to the pumping station complex 'Buma' was built in 1939-1941 on the orders of Rijkswaterstaat, Department Rijksdienst IJsselmeerpolders (R.IJ.P.). It was, like the pumping station and the two service buildings at the upper gate of the lock, completed in 1940 by the firm Rietveld & Verdoorn's Aannemersbedrijf (Papendrecht). The steel skeleton of the building was manufactured by the N.V. Machinefabriek Braat in Rotterdam. The electrical work on the pumping station and the transformer and switching building was carried out by the N.V. Heemaf in Hengelo. On 7 January 1941 the four transformers in the transformer building and the three pumps of the pumping station were put into operation, which meant that the drainage of the polder could begin.

Description

The transformer building stands on a broad substructure clad in brick with stairs and is reinforced by means of a steel skeleton. The building is constructed of fair-faced brick from a rectangular floor plan and has granite plinths and a cantilevered, mansard roof covered with improved Dutch tiles with four ventilation ducts on short, rendered chimneys. The ridge of the roof is longer than the gutter lines, which means that the cantilevers filled with cassettes above the gable ends taper to a point. The gable openings are straight-topped and stand under roll moulding or lintel. The gable end facing the lock is of the pointed gable type and contains a steel door with glazing bars in the fanlight and side lights and a small round window with steel frame and concrete drip channel in the rendered surround in the gable top. The roof extends to the ridge. The long side facing the pumping station is vertically articulated by the iron roof trusses of the steel construction. All four right-hand gable sections are each provided with a steel door standing under a roll moulding. The left-hand bays are provided with two and one narrow window respectively. The rear gable end contains a rectangular window and a round window in the top of the pointed gable like that in the other gable end. The long side facing the Lemstergeul has from right to left in the bays a narrow small window, a deeply set non-original roll door (where originally two narrow windows were located) and four steel doors standing under roll moulding above a platform resting on concrete consoles.

Valuation

The transformer building is of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value.

- The transformer building has cultural-historical value because its construction marks the beginning of the Noordoostpolder and it therefore belongs to the oldest still existing structures in the Noordoostpolder.

- The building has architectural-historical value because of its specific, characteristic for the period of construction design and construction and as an important work from the oeuvre of a leading architect.

- The building has ensemble value because of the special visual and functional coherence with the other components of the complex and the location.

- The building is important because of its recognisability and integrity.
