Inleiding

Introduction

The AULA of "De Nieuwe Ooster" Cemetery designed in 1938 and completed in 1939 by ir. J. Leupen in consultation with the city architect of the Department of Public Works, is executed in the manner of Traditionalism on the site of the old building from 1892 at the entrance on Kruislaan in the main axis of the cemetery.

N.B. The aula was extended in the nineteen-nineties of the twentieth century with, among other things, a crematorium.

Description

The symmetrically planned aula building is composed of various volumes of one storey. The actual double-height aula has a fan-shaped plan which is connected by means of an intermediate section to a rectangular hall, with the lower waiting rooms placed transversely on it. The walls of the building are covered with a rough layer of scratched Chromolith and stand on a fretted hardstone plinth. The cladding of the porticoes, steps, under-sills and door frames are of hardstone (Vinalmont). The roof of the aula is flat and covered with mastic, the gabled roofs of the other parts are clad with red copper. The aula has three large round windows with leaded glass on the front and is otherwise blank. On the rear side there are bronze doors from the original rear facade. The entrance wall of the hall contains a large copper window frame with glass doors. The side wings have a niche accessible via two hardstone steps with two hollow copper columns placed in antis. The gabled roof and the top gable function as a pediment. In front of the doors decorative wrought-iron railings. The long sides of the side wings have on the front six pairs of casement windows of unpainted wood and a single round window with ornamental grille.

Interior The hall and aula contain wall paintings by painter A. Muis (1914-1988), which were completed in 1952. In the hall three paintings of grieving persons are applied, on the middle wall and both side walls of the aula a Mediterranean landscape (total 9 x 16 metres). From the entrance hall one enters the aula through an intermediate section entirely clad with travertine. In the aula there are eight round columns (almost nine metres high) along the concave rear wall, clad with Kermajol, a polished hard relief plaster. The columns have base bands and capitals of bronze. The bronze standing lamps with shell ornaments and wall brackets belong to the original interior furnishings. The floor is laid with Roman travertine.

Valuation

The aula with associated wall paintings and interior components from 1939 is of general importance because of the architectural and cultural-historical value as a characteristic example of a funerary reception building from the second quarter of the twentieth century, in a traditionalistic architecture and iconography characteristic for the time and function. The aula is also of importance in the oeuvre of J. Leupen and because of ensemble value as a later added yet visually defining component of the complex of the "Nieuwe Ooster" cemetery.
