Omschrijving

Description
Description
Designed by L.A. Springer, PARK LAYOUT with PATH SYSTEM belonging to the Nieuwe Oosterbegraafplaats complex. The layout of the cemetery is determined in particular by the initial layout of 1889 and by the extension of 1917, also designed by Springer. The oldest part was laid out on a 16 hectare pasture, surrounded by quays that was raised by 2½ metres. The ditching of the grounds on the side of the Middenweg has been partially removed by the construction of iron fencing on a high concrete plinth and with fence pillars. The cemetery was subsequently extended several times, among others in 1930, in 1942 and most recently in 1959 to a total area of 33 hectares. The oldest part of the cemetery was designed as a landscape park in a mixed style with a hierarchical system of winding paths, within which more formal elements and a central axis from the western entrance. The cemetery has planting with groups of trees and shrubs and avenue plantings along the geometric parts. This planting plays an important role in the design of the layout. In the design a system of sight lines is recognizable, in which the buildings of the cemetery fulfil a prominent role. The grave allocation in the oldest section is subordinate to the landscape layout. The important graves are located along the main path system. The rest on the grave fields. The three most important extensions are characterized by a park layout in a combination of loops and axes. The landscape layout of the extensions has a more formal pattern than the first layout. The layout of the cemetery in the later extensions is increasingly determined by the structure of the grave allocation.
Valuation
Phased park layout and path system of the Nieuwe Oosterbegraafplaats of general importance owing to its cultural, funerary historical and garden architectural history value and of importance as a historically-functional and structuring component of the Nieuwe Oosterbegraafplaats complex.
