Omschrijving

- vanwege de ontwikkelingsgeschiedenis;

- vanwege de integratie van de bestaande agrarische structuur (landbouwgronden, weilanden en boomgaarden, doorsneden door houtwallen, beukenhagen en sloten met wilgen) in de landschappelijke aanleg;

- vanwege de formele lanenstructuur, waar verschillende toegangslanen met een laanbeplanting van eik of beuk deel van uitmaken;

- vanwege het kleine en grote wandelbos van gemengd loofhout met slingerend padenverloop;

- vanwege de aanwezigheid van een houtopstand die deels teruggaat tot de 18de en 19de eeuw;

- vanwege de functioneel-ruimtelijke samenhang met de andere onderdelen van de buitenplaats;

- vanwege de landschappelijke en cultuurhistorische samenhang met de buitenplaatsen Oud- en Nieuw- Amelisweerd;

- vanwege de recreatieve waarde.

Description

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. The country estate Rhijnauwen, situated on the edge of Utrecht, forms together with the country houses Oud- and Nieuw-Amelisweerd part of a continuous green area with significant landscape, cultural-historical and recreational values. The landscape park layout around Rhijnauwen has an agricultural character. Beside agricultural land (arable and pasture) and orchards, a larger and a smaller woodland walk form part of the layout. The agricultural land and orchards are intersected by straight lanes and paths, marked by avenue plantings (beech and oak), beech hedges, field boundaries and/or ditches. Both landscape park woodlands have a mixed composition of deciduous timber and are intersected by winding walking paths. The partly moated main building lies on the Kromme Rijn, more or less centrally in the layout. The forecourt is accessible from the Koningslaan (south) via a long, oak-planted approach lane, which however does not stand at right angles to the house. Just before the Kromme Rijn the lane bends eastward and then comes directly in front of the gatehouse. From the northwest the forecourt is accessible via a long formal beech-planted approach/vista lane, which also does not lie on the house axis. This lane emerges several tens of metres north of the main building and is led via two right angles under the gatehouse to the forecourt.

The northwestern approach lane (Vossegatsdijk/Rhijnauwenselaan) is the original approach lane to Rhijnauwen. The lane, planted with beeches since ancient times, is already indicated on a surveyor's map from 1603 (Jan Rutgersz. Van den Berch). The reason that this approach lane does not stand at right angles to the house presumably relates to the fact that the lane system dates back to the structure of old reclamation plots. The still existing lane has been visually terminated since the 1920s by a tea house, which due to its decorative rural architectural design adds value to the layout.

Perpendicular to the lane, a series of three cross lanes were projected. Part of this lane pattern is also (in layout) recognizable on the aforementioned 1603 map, the entire system is depicted on a surveyor's map from 1779 (J.P. Colognac). The two lanes in the vicinity of the house have been preserved, the third lane has disappeared, possibly as a result of the construction of the fort north of Rhijnauwen.

Northwest of the house lies the former Hunting Wood, now called Bird Wood or High Wood. This wood is drawn in on the aforementioned Rhijnauwen map from 1779. The farmhouse 'De hoge boomgaard' at the southeastern point of the wood is located where the original Hunting Lodge once stood. The wood consisted of coppice surrounded by a triangular lane structure and intersected by the northwestern approach lane. The eastern lane of the triangle has been shifted in a northwesterly direction (presumably due to the construction of the fort), the other two lanes have been preserved in their original layout.

In the 19th century the ditch between the main building and the forecourt was filled in and a landscape park was laid out in place of two 'pleasure orchards'. Presumably around the same time winding walking paths were laid out in the Hunting Wood. Around 1900 a formal garden was laid out behind the house, on the site where a similar garden had also existed in the 18th century. This disappeared again in the course of the 20th century.

West of the main building barracks were built to expand the accommodation, surrounded by tennis courts and a 'children's farm'. South of the main building and north of the tea house car parks have been laid out. These twentieth-century interventions are of subordinate importance for the protection.

Valuation

The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Rhijnauwen is of general importance:

- due to the development history;

- due to the integration of the existing agricultural structure (agricultural land, pastures and orchards, intersected by field boundaries, beech hedges and ditches with willows) in the landscape layout;

- due to the formal lane structure, where various approach lanes with avenue plantings of oak or beech form part;

- due to the small and large woodland walk of mixed deciduous timber with winding path layout;

- due to the presence of woodland stands that partly date back to the 18th and 19th centuries;

- due to the functional-spatial coherence with the other components of the country estate;

- due to the landscape and cultural-historical coherence with the country houses Oud- and Nieuw-Amelisweerd;

- due to the recreational value.
