The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 1: langgevelboerderij.

Inleiding

Description component 1: long-gable farmhouse.

Introduction

Former FARMHOUSE of the long-gable type with bakehouse and transverse section. The farmhouse dates from before 1700. Names, birth and death dates of the inhabitants are known from 1729 onwards. The farmhouse was enlarged in the first half of the nineteenth century and carefully converted from 1974 onwards into a residential farmhouse. The residential part still features a rare completely authentic interior.

Description

The single-storey long-gable farmhouse with reed-thatched gabled roof has a spout gable at the residential section on the street side and a half-hipped roof at the transverse section side. Above a plastered plinth rises the spout gable with central chimney in red handmade brick (21 x 10 x 4 cm) in random bond. Wattle-work under the roof edge, rod anchors. On the left side a construction joint with an extension in yellow Ijssel brick (16 x 7.5 x 3.5 cm), in front of which a small bakehouse with pantile-covered gabled roof, leaning against the street facade. On the boundary between old and new construction the tall chimney of the bakehouse. The gable has on the left of centre a large 20-pane sash window and two clamped shutters. The attic storey has two small, symmetrically placed 6-pane windows. The long right side gable, which projects slightly, has from left to right a large 20-pane sash window with two clamped shutters, a small barred basement window with above it the horizontal 6-pane window with two clamped shutters of the chamber room. Beside it the simple solid front door with a cast-iron tree-of-life fanlight. The stable section has a roof set at a lower level. Below it from left to right a 4-pane window with two clamped shutters; a segmental-arched solid stable door; a large segmental-arched, corbel-arch-shaped, clamped double stable door, formerly solid and now fitted with glass and glazing bars; a four-part, semi-circular, wooden stable window. The opposite long left side gable has an extension with a divided window fitted with two clamped shutters, under a lower continuous roof. In the orange-red bricks (17 x 8 x 3.4/4.0 cm) near the gable some scratched inscriptions "A K 1843 THEOL", "H K 1862", "A M" and "H K". This extension cannot therefore have been constructed later than 1843. Beside the extension a large 20-pane sash window with two clamped shutters. Under the lower continuous roof above the stable section respectively a squared, formerly solid stable door, now fitted with large panes of glass; on either side thereof a small semi-circular stable window divided in four; a small segmental-arched 1-pane window; a large squared, formerly solid transverse door, now renewed with 28 panes of glass, and subsequently again a segmental-arched 4-pane window. The rear gable in cross bond (17 x 7.5/8.0 x 4.5/5 cm) with wattle-work and rod anchors was renewed in the second half of the 19th century and has asymmetrically placed door and window openings. On the ground floor there is a segmental-arched, originally solid stable door, now renewed with panes of glass, to the right of it a segmental-arched 4-pane window. On the storey under the half-hipped roof originally a hay door, now renewed with nine panes, on either side a small semi-circular, three-part small window. All frames and doors converted into windows are painted white, the shutters and doors stand-green. Around the residential section runs a strip of field stones, the gable with the front door has a narrow pavement of brick. The current plot includes part of the old through road from Oosterhout to Dongen - the former Hoogstraat -, which lost its old function through the construction of the A27. This part still possesses the old granite stone paving which also enjoys national monument protection. The boundary between the original plot and the road is formed by a beech hedge.

The building is three-aisled and consists of five regularly placed oak frames with an anchor-beam construction, some of which are incorporated in the partition walls, around which brick walls are built. Through the door and a small corridor one enters the living kitchen, on the right a large fireplace with substantial profiled, painted oak mantelbeam. Against the rear wall Delftware tiles and whites in a checkerboard pattern, at the level of the firebox a vertical strip with exclusively Delftware tiles. The manganese-coloured figurative tiles (second half of the 18th century) were applied during restoration and come from Edam. To the left beside the entrance door to the living kitchen some steps lead down to the small, half-sunken basement with barrel vault. Above it lies the chamber room, with original ceramic floor tiles. The Blue Room, the finest in the house, is located further to the left, against the gable with the large window. The frame standing in this room has rudimentary keystones between the anchor beam (with which they form a whole) and the corbels. Cabinet wall with bed alcove. Ceiling with brace and inlaid children's beams. All the woodwork is painted in light and greyish blue, according to the original colours still present on the inside of the bed alcove doors. Against the outer wall a wooden, grey-marbled fireplace mantel with carved consoles. Within it Delftware medallion tiles (fishermen, walkers, townscapes, mills; eighteenth century). Wainscoting all around with Delftware tiles (sea monsters, mills, ships; 17th-18th centuries). On the floor original orange-red ceramic floor tiles (21 x 21 cm). The hanging and closing hardware and the interior doors are virtually everywhere still authentic. The former stable with transverse section, accessible via a door to the right behind the front door, beside the fireplace, is now converted into living space, but still entirely present as a shell. The interior walls have been completely renewed and cement wool boards have been applied against the hay loft and the sloping roof surfaces. In this space stand two frames of the anchor-beam type. Hay loft on sleepers. Against the rear side of the fireplace of the living kitchen a new chimney has been built, beside it an authentic built-in round firebox for a boiler, intended for the preparation of animal feed.

Valuation

The long-gable farmhouse is of general importance. The property has cultural-historical value as an example of a farmhouse whose habitation history is well documented through the rich coin hoard. The object is of architectural-historical value because of the great coherence between interior and exterior, which through their preservation display a high degree of integrity. The interior is moreover of particular value because of numerous authentic ornamental details. Through the location of the farmhouse with barns on an old traffic axis, it has clear ensemble value and marks the old settlement nucleus of Oosteind.
