Omschrijving
Hoogstraat 80, Oosterhout (onderdeel 2)
Inleiding.

Description
Hoogstraat 80, Oosterhout (component 2)
Introduction.
On the south side of the site, near the Monnikendreef, a WORKSHOP with various studios from 1927, designed by pater Jacques van der Mey in Craftsmanship-traditional style with elements of the English country house style and the Amsterdam School. The design concerned a trial model for a devotional chapel to be built later in Egmond. The work was carried out by the monks themselves. Part of the building is still used as a studio today. The interior has been altered and modernised in parts. Through the construction of this studio building, various workshops previously scattered could be brought together under one roof. Initially this concerned a tailory, bookbindery, carpentry shop, small printing shop, (gold) smithy and, for pater van der Meij himself, a painter's studio. The technical equipment was supplemented year by year. Since 1942 the abbey's technical workshop has been registered with the Chamber of Commerce and Manufactures under the name 'Electrical construction workshop "The Welded Curved Rod": electrical installation office for low and high voltage, smithy, coppersmith's workshop and zinc working, gas and water pipes, central heating and modern sanitary facilities'.
Description.
The object has a cruciform (Latin cross) floor plan with bevelled corners at the longest arm of the cross and consists of one storey with a roof chamber under a reed-thatched, composite roof. Abutting roofs on the transept arms with lower ridge line but equal eaves line. Half-hipped roof on the north side. Ridges with red reed finials. Chimney on the east side. The brick masonry, laid in half-brick bond, is enlivened by continuous ashlar lintels above the windows. Partly simplified windows with hard stone drip moulds, mostly with wooden six- and eighteen-pane windows with (coupled) single-pane fanlights. Symmetrical northern gable end crowned with a clipped spout gable. Central door, covered by a canopy on iron supports, provides access to pater van der Meij's former painter's studio. On either side, as well as on the upper floor, narrow windows. Main entrance in the west facade via a clamped door under a roll moulding, also covered by a canopy on iron supports. The interior layout has been recognisably preserved. Small vestibule at the main entrance on the west side provides access to several former studios on either side and to a rear passage running through to the east facade. On either side of this passage also (former) studios. Remarkable double door of own manufacture with panels set in circles (as also present in the monastery). Beam ceiling, cemented floor.
Valuation.
The workshop is of general importance. The object possesses cultural-historical values as a particular expression of spiritual, economic and cultural developments, namely the establishment of new, largely self-sufficient monastic communities at the beginning of the twentieth century - in this case as a consequence of the French Law on Associations -, the crises of the nineteen twenties and thirties, and the rise of (artistic) craftsmanship, partly under the influence of technological innovations. Furthermore, because of the importance of the building type as a trial model for a devotional chapel and for the typological development of monastery workshops. The object has architectural-historical value because of the aesthetic qualities of the architectural design.
The object possesses, together with the other objects belonging to the Sint Paulus Abbey and the monasteries situated within the 'Holy Triangle', ensemble values as an essential part of a historically developed religious ensemble to the south-east of the centre of Oosterhout. The object is of importance because of the recognisably preserved main form.
