Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
South of the village centre of Nederweert near Molenberg and Wessemerdijk, there is a lock (15) of which the capacity of the WEIR has been increased. This capacity was increased in 1939 as part of the general strengthening of the Netherlands in general and as an element of the Peel-Raam Position in particular. This increase was deemed necessary in order to be able to better regulate the water level of the circulation canal -and thereby of the Noordervaart, with which this circulation canal is in connection- This was of great importance because it was intended to carry out inundations with the Noordervaart.
Description
Lock 15, a bayonet lock whereby the lock is built at an angle to the canal axis, was constructed as a junction between 1919 and circa 1922. At the time of this construction the circulation canal was also laid out as a discharge canal of the Zuid-Willemsvaart and as a supply canal for the Noordervaart. For this purpose a small inlet was also installed at the upper pond of the lock, which was enlarged in 1939. The inlet is now approximately two metres wide and just over a metre high and deep, made of concrete. The water then moves via the paddle wheel of the hydroelectric power station, the culvert under the Wessem-Nederweert canal, to the Noordervaart.
Valuation
The lock with inlet is of general interest. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and is as such an important document of military history. The object is of architectural and construction-historical importance due to its particular use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, particularly in the processing of reinforced concrete. The object is also of importance for the typological development of various defensive objects and structures concerning national land defence.
The object has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole: on the one hand as part of land defence (the entire array of positions on the eve of the Second World War), and on the other hand as an important (structuring) component of the Peel region which as a military landscape is of cultural-historical importance. The lock with inlet has a particular historical-spatial relationship with roads, waters and soil conditions of the area. This interconnection also gives the complex considerable appreciation value. Furthermore, attention must be drawn to the integrity of the entire complex. In this regard, the entire position as a large-scale military complex and reminder of a large-scale implemented defensive measure in relation to the Second World War in Limburg is rare.
