Inleiding
In de hoek die gevormd wordt door de loodrechte kruising van de A2 over het kanaal (Zuid-Willemsvaart) en de Rijksweg-Zuid staat, nog net op het grondgebied van de gemeente Nederweert, de B-KAZEMAT K13. De kazemat staat in het veld, aan de rand van het fietspad dat langs de Rijksweg-Zuid loopt. Schuin ervoor, op nauwelijks meer dan een meter afstand, staat de Peeldivisiekazemat K14. Ten westen van deze twee-eenheid staan -op Weerts grondgebied- twee andere Peeldivisiekazematten, en ten oosten ervan -grondgebied gemeente Nederweert- een andere B-kazemat.
Beschrijving
De kazemat had ten doel overschrijding van het kanaal te verhinderen, waarbij tevens de nabij gelegen kazemat K14 geflankeerd werd. De locatie zo dicht bij de frontlinie is opmerkelijk te noemen. Uit financiële overwegingen echter werd soms op plaatsen waar men een G-kazemat wilde bouwen een B-kazemat gebouwd, welke aanmerkelijk goedkoper was. Het nadeel was dat B-kazematten uiteraard minder geschikt zijn om direct aan een front geplaatst te worden. Maar B-kazematten hadden in ieder geval als voordeel boven de S-kazematten -die wèl geschikt zijn om aan een frontpositie geplaatst te worden- dat ze met zwaarder geschut uitgerust konden worden. Overigens is de kazemat is gaaf en vertoont geen zichtbare sporen van gevechtshandelingen. Alle openingen zijn dichtgemaakt.
Waardering
De kazemat is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en geografische ontwikkeling, namelijk de versterking en daaropvolgende verdediging van Nederland tijdens de Tweede wereldoorlog en is als zodanig een belangrijk document van de militaire geschiedenis. Het is architectuur- en bouwhistorisch van belang wegens het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de toepassing van moderne materialen en technieken, met name in de verwerking van gewapend beton. Het is ook van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van diverse verdedigingsobjecten- en structuren inzake de nationale landsverdediging.
Het heeft ensemblewaarden als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel: enerzijds als onderdeel van de landsverdediging (het geheel aan stellingen aan de vooravond van de Tweede Wereldoorlog), en anderzijds als belangrijk (structurerend) onderdeel van het Peelgebied dat als militair landschap cultuurhistorisch van belang is. De kazemat heeft een bijzondere historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met wegen, wateren en bodemgesteldheid van het gebied. Deze verweving geeft het complex ook een grote belevingswaarde. Verder moet gewezen worden op de gaafheid van het gehele complex. Introduction
In the corner formed by the perpendicular crossing of the A2 over the canal (Zuid-Willemsvaart) and the Rijksweg-Zuid, still just on the territory of the municipality of Nederweert, stands the B-CASEMATE K13. The casemate stands in the field, at the edge of the cycle path that runs along the Rijksweg-Zuid. Diagonally in front of it, at barely more than a metre distance, stands the Peeldivisie casemate K14. To the west of this two-unit complex stand -on Weert territory- two other Peeldivisie casemates, and to the east of it -municipality of Nederweert territory- another B-casemate.
Description
The casemate was intended to prevent crossing of the canal, while also flanking the nearby casemate K14. The location so close to the front line is remarkable. For financial reasons, however, sometimes a B-casemate was built in places where a G-casemate was desired, which was considerably cheaper. The disadvantage was that B-casemates were obviously less suitable for placement directly at a front. But B-casemates had at least the advantage over S-casemates -which are indeed suitable for front positions- that they could be equipped with heavier artillery. The casemate has a particular historical-spatial relationship with roads, waterways and soil conditions of the area. This interweaving also gives the complex considerable experiential value. Furthermore, attention must be drawn to the integrity of the entire complex. The entire position as a large-scale military complex and reminder of a large-scale executed defence measure in relation to the Second World War in Limburg is rare.
