Inleiding

Introduction

In the corner formed by the perpendicular crossing of the A2 over the canal and the Rijksweg-Zuid stands, still just within the territory of the municipality of Nederweert, the PEELDIVISIE CASEMATE K14. The casemate stands in the field, at the edge of the cycle path running along the Rijksweg-Zuid. Diagonally behind it, barely more than a metre away, stands the B-casemate K13. To the west of this pair stand -on Weerts territory- two other Peeldivisie casemates, and to the east of it -municipality of Nederweert territory- another B-casemate.

Description The casemate was intended to prevent crossing of the canal. In this the casemate was flanked by the somewhat recessed casemate K13. It is moreover obvious that this casemate was built earlier than the K13: Peeldivisie casemates were namely built in anticipation of (or rather: due to the failure of) the construction of casemates by the Dutch Bureau Stellingbouw. Given the regular placement of casemates -every 200 to 300 metres- along linear defence lines such as the Zuid-Willemsvaart, it is logical that later constructed casemates such as the K13 were built at roughly the same location. Incidentally, the casemate is intact and shows no visible signs of combat activity. All openings have been sealed. The remains of the timber casing are still clearly visible.

Valuation

The casemate is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and is as such an important document of military history. The object is of architectural and construction-historical importance due to the particular use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, in particular in the processing of reinforced concrete. It is also of importance for the typological development of various defence objects and structures regarding national land defence.

The object has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole: on the one hand as part of the land defence (the entirety of fortifications on the eve of the Second World War), and on the other hand as an important (structuring) component of the Peel region which is of cultural-historical importance as a military landscape. The casemate has a particular historical-spatial relationship with roads, waterways and soil conditions of the area. This interweaving also gives the complex great perceptual value. Furthermore, attention should be drawn to the integrity of the entire complex. The entire fortification line as a large-scale military complex and reminder of a large-scale defence measure carried out in relation to the Second World War in Limburg is rare.
