The register's description

Waardering
De HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG is van algemeen belang:
- als representatief voorbeeld van een deels in structuur en deels in detail gaaf bewaard gebleven voorbeeld van een parkaanleg in landschapsstijl van de hand van H. van Lunteren uit de eerste kwart van de 19de eeuw;
- als voorbeeld van het werk van Van Lunteren;

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT

Description of the component of the complex pertains to the area that lies in the municipality of Zeist. Meadow and arable land to the south of the country estate. This forms part of the historic garden and park layout of Pijnenburg.

The landscape-style garden layout, preserved partly in structure and partly in detail, was realised around 1830 after the design of garden architect H. van Lunteren. The structure of the layout is carried by the paths running in curves and the winding serpentine lake with various offtakes which were laid out in different phases. A large and a small island, on which dense young plantings, form part of the layout. The park is also used for forestry. Along the west side of the park winds a fine nineteenth-century beech avenue. From the beech avenue various views are projected outward onto the parallel meadow with coulisse effect. An important axis is the diagonal sight-line across the water feature towards the house. Some recently laid out straight avenues cross through the layout, including a broad chestnut avenue running from the house in a north-westerly direction through the middle of an oval-shaped area that served as a kitchen garden, but is now used for forestry. To the north-east of the old kitchen garden lies the pinetum (the former rose garden). In this open layout stand several special old solitary trees from circa 1810 including a ginkgo, a red oak and a cork oak. From the ice house which is located on the north side is a vista across the water feature. To the north of the house, where the terrain tapers, lies a peculiarly shaped so-called 'ordering office pond', which is bounded on the north side by a gently sloping park area furnished with beeches. Across the pond a sight-line towards the Hunting Lodge. The immediate surroundings around the house have an open character consisting of gently rolling lawns surrounded by tree groups (conifers). From the approach road at the Biltseweg a fine view across the triangular pond, which took this shape upon the construction of the Biltseweg in 1932, towards the house.

Valuation
The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT is of general importance:
- as a representative example of a landscape-style park layout partly preserved in structure and partly in detail, created by H. van Lunteren from the first quarter of the 19th century;
- as an example of the work of Van Lunteren;
- because of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
