The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 1: HOOFDGEBOUW (Pijnenburg).

Waardering

Het HOOFDGEBOUW is van algemeen belang:

- vanwege het in oorsprong 17de-eeuwse hoofdgebouw in Hollands-classicistische stijl naar ontwerp van de architect Vingboons, dat is uitgebreid in 1835 door Homan en in het begin van de 20ste eeuw door Hanrath;

- vanwege de 19de-eeuwse interieurelementen en de bijzondere 'haard'kamer uit het begin van de 20ste eeuw;

- vanwege de markante ligging binnen de historische tuin- en parkaanleg;

Description of part 1: MAIN BUILDING (Pijnenburg).

A block-shaped house on a T-shaped ground plan created in several building periods, the oldest part of which, designed by architect Vingboons, dates from 1647 and the transverse gable was placed at right angles to it in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. The whole was whitewashed in the nineteenth century. The seventeenth-century part (west) consists of a cellar, basement and a bel-etage under a flattened hipped roof covered with grey cross pantiles. On the corners of the roof four chimneys. Centrally in the symmetrically arranged south-west facade is the present main entrance, placed there in 1913/14 by Hanrath and oriented towards a large lawn with water feature. The moulded door with fanlight on the bel-etage is reached via a stone staircase. Under the staircase an access door to the basement. On either side of the entrance two bays consisting of a four-pane window in the basement and a window with two-pane fanlight fitted with blinds on the bel-etage. The rightmost window axis is halved on account of an extension. Above the cornice-topped facade two roof dormers. Against the blind north-west facade a rectangular garage was built in 1996 in the style of the house, this is of subsidiary importance for the protection. The north-east facade of the old house consists of five bays made up of a four-pane sash window in the basement and a window with two-pane fanlight on the bel-etage. Two semi-circularly terminated roof dormers with circular pivoting window. The nineteenth-century part is built higher than the seventeenth-century part and consists of a basement and two storeys under a hipped roof covered with grey cross pantiles. On the ridge two and in the roof slope (north-west) one chimney. The south-east facade is five bays wide with a central risalit, articulated by four pilasters between which three double glazed garden doors with semi-circular tracery fanlight are placed. In front of the risalit a colonnade of four hardstone Ionic columns standing on a hardstone six-step bordes with on either side a twentieth-century square hardstone garden vase. In the colonnade a coffered ceiling (three coffers) decorated with large rosettes. Above the colonnade a balcony with wrought-iron balustrade behind which three double glazed balcony doors. On either side of the central risalit a tall T-window crowned by a wooden cornice resting on consoles and a multi-pane window. All with blinds. In both side facades two window axes formed by multi-pane windows with blinds. In the middle a semi-circular roof dormer with four-pane pivoting window. Around the house a bordes finished with low brick walls with small flights of steps designed by Hanrath (1913/14). On the south-east side of the house a terrace bounded by a semi-circular low brick wall on which two square hardstone vases stand. In the INTERIOR of particular importance is the staircase with oval staircase from 1917; the stucco ceiling in the hall from 1917; the 'hearth' room designed by the then resident E.H.D.Insinger with a monumental marble chimney-breast, wooden beam ceiling and wall panellings from c.1917; the great hall with stucco ceiling and simple chimney-breast from c.1830 and nineteenth-century wallpaper.

Valuation

The MAIN BUILDING is of general importance:

- on account of the originally 17th-century main building in Dutch classical style designed by architect Vingboons, which was extended in 1835 by Homan and in the early 20th century by Hanrath;

- on account of the 19th-century interior elements and the remarkable 'hearth' room from the early 20th century;

- on account of its striking location within the historic garden and park layout;

- on account of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
