DIENSTGEBOUW, ontwerp uit 1883 van J.F. Metzelaar.

Introduction

SERVICE BUILDING, design from 1883 by J.F. Metzelaar. The building is situated on the west side of the dome and is connected to it by a two-storey connecting corridor. The other three sides are partially enclosed by a U-shaped single-storey extension with a lean-to roof from circa 1985.

Description

The two-storey rectangular building with attic and basement is eight bays long and six wide. It has a gabled roof covered with grey newly improved Dutch tiles, between spout gables with the length axis oriented east-west. The masonry consists of hand-formed brickwork in dark-grey laid in Flemish bond. The whole stands on a plinth of clinker bricks. Above this lies, projecting on stone consoles, a stone gutter. At the top the spout gables likewise have a stone coping. Each of the bays has two air vents just below the stone gutter. Above the wall openings a segmental arch in yellow IJssel stone. In the north gable, the first through the fifth bay have, on each of the four levels, a window opening. The sixth bay has a window opening on the storeys and the basement and on the ground floor a door opening. The seventh and eighth bays have only on the second storey a window opening. Against the ground floor and the first storey lies part of the U-shaped extension. In total this gable thus has twenty-five wall openings containing cast-iron windows with drip moulding and ten-pane glazing bars. In the roof plane three flat roof windows are incorporated.

In the south gable only the first and second bay on the second storey have a window opening. Against the ground floor and the first storey lies part of the U-shaped extension. The third through the eighth bay have on each level a window opening. In total this gable has twenty-six window openings containing cast-iron windows with drip moulding and ten-pane glazing bars. The west and east gables are in the form of a top gable. At attic level both gables have four tall windows and above these three small window openings. Moreover the west gable has at the level of the second storey six further tall window openings. These contain wooden frames and windows. In the roof plane four flat roof windows are incorporated. All window openings in the building are provided with iron bar grilles. The roof truss structure contains among other things seven iron arch trusses constructed from I-section.
