Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, designed in 1883 by J.F. Metzelaar, is situated between the gatehouse/forecourt and the cupola. The front or east facade is located at the forecourt that is closed off from the street. The building is connected at the rear over two storeys by a connecting corridor to the cupola.
Originally, on the ground floor there was a meeting room for the Board of Regents, the office of the director, the administrative office, a waiting room and a visiting room for prisoners. The first storey was fitted out as a sick bay with six sickrooms, bathrooms and a warder's room. The attic was intended for prisoners' private clothing and also served as a storehouse.
Description
The rectangular administration building has two storeys. Above this a gabled roof between spout gables. The roof is covered with grey improved Dutch tiles. The symmetrical front and rear facades with a central risalit are five bays wide. The rear facade is positioned on the line of the ring wall.
The masonry consists of hand-formed brickwork laid in English bond alternating with courses of Portland cement stone and the use of various types of natural stone in plinth, band course, frieze, gutter, corbels, wall casing and wall coping. The wall openings of the ground floor have a round arch, those of the storey above a segmental arch. They are bordered by a surround of red Udelfanger sandstone and alternated at the courses by yellow sandstone. In the front facade there is a double entrance door on a stone plinth with a few steps. Painted wood frames with calf and oak frames with six-pane glazing bars. In front of the windows of both storeys are wrought-iron grilles.
On either side of the cupola there is a two-storey corridor perpendicular to it. One corridor adjoins the middle of the rear facade of the administration building and the other adjoins the service building. The masonry of both the north and south facades is executed in brickwork laid in English bond and is finished with a straight soffit board. The flat roof, now covered with zinc, originally had a zinc rafter roof.
In the window openings with stone sills are painted wood frames. In front of the windows on both storeys are wrought-iron grillework. A step in the masonry indicates the transition to the cupola.
The masonry is executed in the same manner as that of the administration building. The doors in the main entrance each have two wrought and decorated hinges as well as a decorated lock plate. The original colour scheme probably consisted of dark varnished doors in light grey frames and likewise light grey windows and frames. The ironwork had light grey grilles and black painted hinges.
