Inleiding

KERKGEBOUW, ontwerp uit 1885 van J.F. Metzelaar.

Introduction

CHURCH BUILDING, design from 1885 by J.F. Metzelaar. The building is located within the ring wall in the south-east corner of the prison grounds.

Religious services within the dome were virtually impossible due to poor acoustics. Therefore, a free-standing cellular church, originally provided with wooden "cells", was built on the grounds.

Description

The church has a rectangular floor plan measuring 19.40 x 12.70 metres, with a gabled roof lying between spout gables. The superstructure consists of hand-moulded brick laid in hard grey in Flemish bond. The whole stands on a plinth of clinkers. Over this lies, projecting on hard stone consoles, a hard stone gutter. The facades have four windows with a semicircular head string and fixed transom. The lower and upper windows are fixed. The window sills are executed in hard stone. At the top the spout gables also have a hard stone capping.

The front facade has four straight windows with a fixed upper window and a sliding lower window. The lower sills are executed in hard stone. Also in this facade is a door window with a semicircular head string and a straight transom. The rear facade is executed blind.

The entire church space is spanned by an open roof truss supported by five roof trusses on wall posts, built up from two roof rafters coupled by a tie beam and struts. The roof truss is double sheathed.

The walls and ceiling are white plastered. The floor is finished with octagonal hard-fired yellow tiles and equal black square fillings and borders.

In the church are, made by prisoners: a wooden pulpit, round tabernacle, prayer desk, crucifix and a fourteen-part Stations of the Cross consisting of round medallions with wooden decorative borders of rope or chain.
