The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

On the opposite side of the lane towards Oisterwijk, and opposite the canteen building, there is the WORKSHOP, which, like the aforementioned buildings, dates from around 1903 and is built in the same style as the canteen building. The extension at the rear dates from a later time.

Description.

The service building is built on a rectangular ground plan with an extension at the rear over the entire length of the facade. It consists of one storey of machine-made brick in English bond. The gabled roof, covered with pantiles, runs across the entire length of the building.

The facade is composed of eighteen bays, of which twelve are provided with windows, one with a blind window, three with a single door and two with a double door. The windows consist of six-pane wooden sash windows under a light segmental arch. The segmental arches are filled with decorative brickwork of red and yellow machine-made brick. The springers and keystones in the segmental arches are of yellow brick. The undersides and topsides of the windows are connected by a speck course, consisting of yellow bricks, which runs through into the side facades. The blind window recess is filled with machine-made brick in herringbone bond. Above the single doors is a fanlight, consisting of a two-pane window, under the same segmental arch as is found above the windows. Above both double doors are two two-pane windows, under a wider segmental arch. Under the eaves gutter is a brick decorative moulding.

The extension at the rear, which extends over the entire length of the building, is two bays wide and has a flat roof. The style and detailing of this facade are the same as those of the front facade. Here there are fifteen windows, clustered in groups of three, four or five, with blind wall surfaces between them. The left side facade contains a hay door on the attic storey, with above it a four-pane arched window. The same applies to the right facade.

Valuation.

The workshop is of general interest. The building has cultural-historical value as an expression of the development of Catholic care for the mentally disabled and the less privileged in the period of Catholic revival. It is a representative of the landscape development, whereby such complexes were placed in rural areas according to a regular, functional ground plan. In the principle of self-sufficiency and labour therapy, the service buildings also played a role. The building has architectural-historical value as a representative of the Traditional-Craft style. It is well preserved and is a typical component of the spatial development near the church village of Biezenmortel to the east of the centre of Udenhout.
