The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

At the rear of the main building, in line with the chapel, a long thoroughfare has been laid out in the direction of Oisterwijk, which forms the most important vista of the complex. On either side of this avenue are business buildings. The FARMHOUSE of the long-gabled type from around 1903 is situated on the left side, in the same building line as the canteen. The farmhouse was not only important for the self-sufficiency of the living community but also served a function in occupational therapy. In this sense it forms an essential part of the complex.

Description.

The farmhouse has a U-shaped floor plan and is constructed of machine-made brick in English bond. The three gabled roofs are covered with interlocking pantiles, which above the main building and the stable are provided with thatched boarding. These two roof trusses are constructed of pine timber trusses with iron bolts. Asbestos ventilation pipes protrude from the three ridge lines.

The single-storey front facade has sixteen bays, which are marked by long rod-shaped wall anchors. To the left of centre is a double door, which extends to below the eaves line and provides access to the passage to the rear yard. Four further single doors are set in the facade, each provided with a bottom-lights fanlight under a lightly arched segmental arch. The door niche in the second bay from the right is blind. The windows consist of four-light windows under segmental arch and have a stone sill under a brick course. The stable windows always consist of two coupled concrete four-light windows under a wide segmental arch. Three bays to the left and three bays to the right of the double door, the facade continues into a dormer under a gabled roof and the eaves line is broken. Here are located double haylofts under segmental arch windows giving access to the upper storey. Below the eaves line is a brick decorative moulding. The rear facade has a similar layout and detailing to the front facade, with the exception of the three bays to the left of centre which consist of two storeys and on the upper floor have three sash windows, of which the upper part consists of two lights and the lower part of twelve lights.

The right side facade is spout-gabled and has on the ground floor four small three-light windows under a light segmental arch. On the upper floor a double hayloft is fitted under a segmental arch window. The under-passage is paved with clinker bricks. To the right of this is a cow stall, the floors of which consist partly of clinker bricks, partly of concrete and partly of wood. Iron I-beams serve as floor joists and are braced by round iron columns. On these are brick system floors laid for the lofts and hay storage. The right side wing consists of two sections under a continuous roof truss. The rear section was added at a later date and is braced by buttresses at the street facade. In the left bay a traditional pilaster (presumably added later) has been fitted, which begins above the window on the ground floor and continues into the dormer under a far-projecting gabled roof. At the height of the upper floor a hayloft is fitted, above which a radially-arched window with twelve lights.

Internally there is a two-aisled cow stall. Round iron columns here support the iron floor joists, which in turn carry concrete system floors. The left side wing has a lower upper storey and therefore a lower roof than the two aforementioned wings. To the left of centre is a double door, which extends to the eaves line and provides access to the entrance, which is paved with clinker bricks. In the left section are two cooling cells which are closed off by heavy and insulated doors.

Evaluation.

The farmhouse is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical value as an expression of the development of Catholic care for intellectually disabled and underprivileged people during the period of Catholic revival. It is a representative of landscape development, whereby such complexes were placed in rural areas according to a regular, functional floor plan. In the principle of self-sufficiency and occupational therapy, the business buildings played an important role. The building has architectural-historical value as a representative of the artisanal-traditional style. It has been preserved in excellent condition and is a typical part of the spatial development near the church village of Biezenmortel to the east of the centre of Udenhout.
