Inleiding.
Het GRAFMONUMENT van de familie van de koopman, winkelier en gemeenteraadslid Bronsgeest-Van de Broek werd vervaardigd door de fa. L. Petit te Tilburg naar een ontwerp van priester-historicus Xavier Smits uit Den Bosch. Het grafmonument werd omstreeks 1915-1925 op de katholieke begraafplaats aan de Bredaseweg geplaatst en heeft elementen van de Weense Sezessionsstil en de Beuroner Schule.
Omschrijving.
Grafmonument bestaande uit een geheel gescharreerd, in rode zandsteen uitgevoerde opstand met opschrift waarboven in reliëf een Calvarievoorstelling, omgeven door een smeedijzeren hek tussen geprofileerde gele zandstenen hoekpalen. Het grafmonument heeft elementen van de Weense Sezessionsstil. De opstand bestaat uit een basis waarop een enigszins naar boven verjongende sokkel met opschrift 'Hier rust de weled. heer / Theodorus C.J. Bronsgeest / lid vh kerkbestuur regent vh gasthuis / penningmr der Vincentius-vereeniging / eerelid der H. Familie / geb. 's Gravenhage 13 oct. 1844 / + Tilburg 15 aug. 1915 / en zijne echtgenoote mevrouw / Joanna Chr. M. v.d. Broek / oud vice pres der St. Elisabeth / en der Maria Ver. / medeoprichtster van Vrouwenadel / lid der H. Familie en Derde Orde / eerelid der Congregatie / en der Ver. v.h. H. Sacrament geb. Tilburg 6 maart 1861 / +Tilburg 8 aug. 1925'. Hierboven een arcosolium, met in reliëf een acanthusmotief, op twee korte zuilen met dobbelsteenkapiteel. Het geheel omlijst een reliëf voorstellende een Calvariegroep. Centraal de gekruisigde Christus met boven zijn hoofd een INRI-bord. Links van hem Maria met de handen gevouwen, het hoofd opgeheven. Rechts van het kruis Johannes de Doper met in zijn handen een boek. Het reliëf toont invloeden van de Beuroner Schule. De opstand heeft een zandstenen zadeldak met overstek en windveer met krullen. Hierop een geprofileerd basement met kruis. Het graf is omgeven door een zandstenen rand met op de hoeken eenvoudig geprofileerde zandstenen palen waartussen een gesmeed hekwerk met alternerende spijlen. De binnenruimte van de rand is opgevuld met grint. Op de paal rechtsvoor de signatuur 'X. Smits / L. Petit'.
Waardering.
Het monument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en geestelijke ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de katholieke grafcultuur. Het grafmonument is tevens van belang vanwege de typologische ontwikkeling en de zeldzaamheid van de voorstelling. Het is bovendien van belang als onderdeel van een groter geheel dat cultuurhistorisch, architectuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig van belang is als de eerste katholieke begraafplaats in Tilburg.

Grave monument consisting of an entirely ashlar-worked, red sandstone structure with inscription above which in relief a Calvary representation, surrounded by a wrought-iron fence between moulded yellow sandstone corner posts. The grave monument has elements of the Vienna Secession style. The structure consists of a base on which a slightly tapering upwards plinth with inscription 'Here rests the honourable mister / Theodorus C.J. Bronsgeest / member of the church council regent of the hospital / treasurer of the Vincentius association / honorary member of the Holy Family / born The Hague 13 Oct. 1844 / + Tilburg 15 Aug. 1915 / and his wife madam / Joanna Chr. M. v.d. Broek / former vice president of St. Elisabeth / and of the Mary association / co-founder of Women's nobility / member of the Holy Family and Third Order / honorary member of the Congregation / and of the association of the Holy Sacrament born Tilburg 6 March 1861 / + Tilburg 8 Aug. 1925'. Above this an arcosolium, with in relief an acanthus motif, on two short columns with cubic capital. The whole is framed by a relief representing a Calvary group. Central the crucified Christ with above his head an INRI board. To his left Mary with folded hands, head raised. To the right of the cross John the Baptist with a book in his hands. The relief shows influences of the Beuron School. The structure has a sandstone gabled roof with overhang and wind brace with curls. On it a moulded base with cross. The grave is surrounded by a sandstone border with at the corners simply moulded sandstone posts between which wrought ironwork with alternating spindles. The interior of the border is filled with gravel. On the post bottom right the signature 'X. Smits / L. Petit'.
Valuation.
The monument is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social and spiritual development, in particular Catholic grave culture. The grave monument is moreover of importance because of the typological development and the rarity of the representation. It is moreover of importance as part of a larger whole that is of cultural-historical, architectural and urban planning importance as the first Catholic cemetery in Tilburg.
