Inleiding.
Op de katholieke begraafplaats aan de Bredaseweg staat het GRAFMONUMENT in Art Nouveauvormen van de familie Aelen. Gerard Aelen kwam uit een bekende fabrikantenfamilie en stond zelf te boek als fabrikant van leer- en textielprodukten. Het grafmonument dateert uit omstreeks 1919.
Omschrijving.
Het grafmonument bestaat uit een grote kelderzerk met tombe en opstand met gebeeldhouwde engel. Het graf is bedekt door een brede hardstenen vloer, aan drie zijden omgeven door een lage hardstenen muur met in cirkels gevatte kruisvormige openingen. Op de hoeken afgeronde hardstenen palen waarop in laag-reliëf kruisen. De palen worden bekroond door witmarmeren vuurpotten waaruit een vlam ontspringt. Tussen de palen aan de voorzijde twee gebogen, geprofileerde wangen met in laag-reliëf enkele ranken. Op de vloer een naar achter oplopende hardstenen tombe met op de zerk het opschrift 'Gerardus A.N. Aelen 1875-1919 / Anna G. Aelen v. Steen 1880-1942'. Tegen de voorzijde van de tombe een hardstenen cartouche zonder opschrift. De zerk sluit aan op een hardstenen enigszins in- en uitgezwenkte opstand met op de voorzijde een witmarmeren driehoekige plaquette met portretfoto op porselein van G. Aelen waaronder een banderol zonder tekst. Hierboven een rechthoekige witmarmeren plaat met het opschrift 'Familiegraf / van / Gerardus A.N. Aelen'. De opstand wordt bekroond door een geprofileerde dekplaat met tandlijst. Deze vormt de basis voor een levensgrote, in wit marmer uitgevoerde engel met opgeheven, gespreide vleugels. In de rechterhand heeft de engel een bazuin, in de linkerhand een boek. Achter de engel een kruis met driepas aan de kruisarmen en op de kruising een cirkel.
Waardering.
Het monument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en geestelijke ontwikkeling in de vorm van een bijzonder grafmonument. Het object is tevens van belang vanwege de typologie en de uniciteit. Het object is bovendien van belang doordat het onderdeel uitmaakt van een groter geheel dat cultuurhistorisch, architectuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig van belang is als de eerste katholieke begraafplaats van Tilburg.

Description.
The grave monument consists of a large vault grave with tomb and pediment with carved angel. The grave is covered by a broad hardstone floor, on three sides surrounded by a low hardstone wall with cross-shaped openings set in circles. Rounded hardstone posts at the corners topped with white marble flame urns from which a flame springs. Between the posts at the front two curved, profiled consoles with some tendrils in low relief. On the floor a hardstone tomb rising towards the back with on the slab the inscription 'Gerardus A.N. Aelen 1875-1919 / Anna G. Aelen v. Steen 1880-1942'. Against the front of the tomb a hardstone cartouche without inscription. The slab adjoins a hardstone somewhat inswung and outswung pediment with on the front a white marble triangular plaquette with portrait photograph on porcelain of G. Aelen below which a ribbon without text. Above this a rectangular white marble plate with the inscription 'Family grave / of / Gerardus A.N. Aelen'. The pediment is crowned by a profiled cornice with tooth moulding. This forms the basis for a life-size angel executed in white marble with raised, spread wings. In the right hand the angel holds a trumpet, in the left hand a book. Behind the angel a cross with trefoils at the cross arms and at the crossing a circle.
Valuation.
The monument is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social and spiritual development in the form of a particularly distinctive grave monument. The object is also of importance because of its typology and uniqueness. The object is moreover of importance in that it forms part of a larger whole that is of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning importance as the first Catholic cemetery of Tilburg.
