Inleiding.
Het GRAFMONUMENT van Hendrik Bernard Beckers behoort tot de oudste nog aanwezige grafmonumenten op de katholieke begraafplaats aan de Bredaseweg. Het grafmonument werd omstreeks 1852, enkele jaren na de opening van de begraafplaats, vervaardigd en vertoont Neo-Classicistische elementen. De overledene was notaris en burgemeester van Tilburg.
Omschrijving.
Geheel uit hardsteen vervaardigd grafmonument met Neo-classicistische elementen bestaande uit een geprofileerde basis waarop een sokkel welke aan vier zijden is voorzien van een rechthoekig spaarveld. De sokkel wordt aan vier zijden bekroond door een fronton met op de hoeken acroteria. Op de frontons, in reliëf, een doodshoofd waaronder gekruiste beenderen. Op de sokkel is een afgeknotte obelisk geplaatst. Op het spaarveld aan de voorzijde het opschrift 'Hier ligt begraven / den heer / Hendrik Bernardus Beckers / geboren te Tilburg en aldaar godvruchtig overleden / den 2 december 1852 in de ouderdom van ruim / 54 jaren / (IJdelheid der IJdelh)eden alles is ijdelheid behalve / God te beminnen en hem alleen te dienen / Thom. A Kempis (IB 1CAP 3V) / Dat hij ruste in vrede*'.
Waardering.
Het monument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale, politieke en geestelijke ontwikkeling, het verwijst naar personen die een rol speelden in de emancipatie van Zuid-Nederland. Het is tevens van belang vanwege de typologie als een van laatste in Noord-Brabant bewaarde en in Tilburg een van de oudste voorbeelden van dit type grafmonument. Het is bovendien van belang als onderdeel van een groter geheel dat cultuurhistorisch, architectuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig van belang is als de eerste katholieke begraafplaats in Tilburg.

The GRAVE MONUMENT of Hendrik Bernard Beckers belongs to the oldest still present grave monuments on the Catholic cemetery on the Bredaseweg. Grave monument executed entirely in hardstone with Neo-classical elements consisting of a profiled base on which a socle which on all four sides is provided with a rectangular sparefeld. The socle is crowned on all four sides by a pediment with acroteria at the corners. On the pediments, in relief, a skull beneath crossed bones. On the socle an obelisk has been placed. On the sparefield at the front the inscription 'Here lies buried / the gentleman / Hendrik Bernardus Beckers / born in Tilburg and there piously deceased / on 2 December 1852 at the age of more than / 54 years / (Vanity of vanities) all is vanity except / to love God and to serve him alone / Thom. A Kempis (IB 1CAP 3V) / May he rest in peace*'.
Valuation.
The monument is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social, political and spiritual development, it refers to persons who played a role in the emancipation of South Netherlands. It is also of importance because of its typology as one of the last examples of this type of grave monument preserved in North Brabant and in Tilburg one of the oldest examples of this type. It is moreover of importance as part of a larger whole that is of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning importance as the first Catholic cemetery in Tilburg.
