Inleiding.
Op de katholieke begraafplaats aan de Bredaseweg staat het GRAFMONUMENT voor het echtpaar Lodewijk Frans Bourgonjon en Theonie Virgine Roeland. Lodewijk Frans Bourgonjon (1835-1925) was een uit Gent afkomstige beeldhouwer die onder andere opdrachten uitvoerde voor P. Cuypers te Roermond. Tevens werd hij later leraar aan de Quellinusschool te Amsterdam. Na zijn eerste huwelijk met Rosalia Josepha Colombien (+1868) hertrouwde hij met Theonie V. Roeland. Hun dochter Alice Bourgonjon zou later in het huwelijk treden met H.W.E. Moller, grondlegger van de grote katholieke onderwijsinstellingen in het Zuiden. Het grafmonument voor het echtpaar Bourgonjon-Roeland werd omstreeks 1925 vervaardigd door zoon Gerard P.D. Bourgonjon (1871-1963). Deze in Tilburg werkzame beeldhouwer ontwierp ook het graf voor zijn zwager H.W.E. Moller en was tevens oprichter van de afdeling beeldhouwkunst aan de Academie te Tilburg.
Omschrijving.
Het, uitgezonderd de hardstenen zerksteen, geheel in zandsteen uitgevoerde grafmonument bestaat uit een in reliëf gebeeldhouwde opstand op een tombe. Het grafmonument, met elementen van de Art Nouveau, bestaat uit een enigszins oplopende tombe met op de hoeken palen, de achterste hoger dan die aan de voorzijde. De palen hebben een gestyleerd gebeeldhouwde kop. Tussen de palen een rand in de vorm van een halve eierlijst. Op de oplopende tombe een hardstenen zerk met opschrift 'Hier wachten / de opstanding voor de eeuwigheid / Lodewijk Frans Bourgonjon / geb. te Brugge 19 jan. 1835 / overl. te Tilburg 8 mei 1925 / en zijn echtgenote / Theonie Virgine Bourgonjon / geboren Roeland / geb. te Gent 29 aug. 1844 / overl. te Tilburg 25 maart 1926'. Aan het hoofdeinde een opstand bestaande uit een staande engel waarvan de vleugeltoppen zich als een halo rond het hoofd vormen. Achter de vleugels is een kruis zichtbaar. De engel, gekleed in een lang gewaad met sterk gestileerde symmetrische plooival, heeft op de borst een bronzen plaquette met een dubbelportret van het echtpaar Bourgonjon-Roeland en de opschriften '1844-1926 - 1835-1925' en 'L.F. Bourgonjon - Th. Roeland'. Het reliëf is gesigneerd 'G. Bourgonjon'. De wijde mouwen van het kleed vormen een kader waarin het reliëf is geplaatst.
Waardering.
Het monument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en geestelijke ontwikkeling in de vorm van een bijzonder grafmonument. Het object is tevens van belang vanwege de typologische zeldzaamheid en de uniciteit daar het een werk betreft van de hand van G.P.D. Bourgonjon. On the rising tomb a hardstone slab with the inscription 'Here we await / the resurrection for eternity / Lodewijk Frans Bourgonjon / born in Bruges 19 Jan. 1835 / died in Tilburg 8 May 1925 / and his wife / Theonie Virgine Bourgonjon / born Roeland / born in Ghent 29 Aug. 1844 / died in Tilburg 25 March 1926'. At the head end a pediment consisting of a standing angel whose wing tips form like a halo around the head. Behind the wings a cross is visible. The angel, clothed in a long garment with strongly stylized symmetrical fold arrangement, has on the chest a bronze plaquette with a double portrait of the married couple Bourgonjon-Roeland and the inscriptions '1844-1926 - 1835-1925' and 'L.F. Bourgonjon - Th. Roeland'. The relief is signed 'G. Bourgonjon'. The wide sleeves of the garment form a frame in which the relief is placed.
Valuation.
The monument is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social and spiritual development in the form of a particularly distinctive grave monument. The object is also of importance because of its typological rarity and uniqueness in that it is a work by G.P.D. Bourgonjon.
