Inleiding.
Het Neogotische GRAFMONUMENT voor Simon L. de Beer en zijn echtgenote A. Wouters behoort tot de oudste nog bestaande monumenten op de katholieke begraafplaats aan de Bredaseweg. Het werd omstreeks 1858 vervaardigd in het atelier van L. Petit.
Omschrijving.
Grafmonument bestaande uit een tombe met sokkel waarop een gebeeldhouwde figuur. Het grafmonument bestaat uit een op een breed basement geplaatste, enigszins oplopende hardstenen zerk met geprofileerde plint. Op de zerk twee witmarmeren dekplaten waarvan de inscriptie nagenoeg onleesbaar is: 'Aan onze dierbare ouders...'. Het opschrift betreft de hier begraven Simon L. de Beer, overleden 23 januari 1858 en A. Wouters, overleden 25 april 184?. Aan het hoofdeinde van de zerk een geprofileerde sokkel met neogotische elementen. Op de hoeken van de sokkel witmarmeren kleine zuilen met bladkapitelen en geprofileerde bases. Op de zuilen rust een in hardsteen uitgevoerde geprofileerde ojiefboog, bekroond door een witmarmeren kruisbloem. Op de spitsboogvormige spaarvelden tussen de zuilen witmarmeren platen. Op de plaat aan de voorzijde het opschrift 'Ik trek U uit / een vreemde / verblijfplaats / om U ene / vaste woning / te geven / gij waart / vreemdelingen / op aarde / in den hemel / zult gij / inwoners zijn / St. Aug. in ps. 148'. Op deze sokkel een rechthoekig basement waarop een witmarmeren beeld, voorstellende een vrouwenfiguur met rechts van haar een kruis dat zij met de rechterhand omvat. In haar hand een kroon. Haar linkerhand rust op een geopend boek dat staat op een kleine, geprofileerde sokkel links van haar. Op het boek het opschrift 'V 360 (?) / (over de twee bladzijden:) Handelingen der Apostelen / (op de linkerpagina:) Door vele / verdruk / kingen / moeten / (op de rechter pagina:) wij in / gaan in / het Rijk / Gods'. Rechtsonder op de zerk de signatuur 'L. Petit'.
Waardering.
Het monument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en geestelijke ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de katholieke grafcultuur. Het is van belang vanwege de typologie en uniciteit van de voorstelling. Het is bovendien van belang als onderdeel van een groter geheel dat cultuurhistorisch, architectuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig van belang is als de eerste katholieke begraafplaats van Tilburg.

Grave monument consisting of a tomb with a plinth on which a sculptured figure stands. The grave monument consists of a slightly sloping freestone slab placed on a broad base, with a moulded plinth. On the slab two white marble cover plates whose inscription is almost illegible: 'To our dear parents...'. The inscription concerns Simon L. de Beer, who died 23 January 1858 and A. Wouters, who died 25 April 184?. At the head end of the slab a moulded plinth with Neogothic elements. On the corners of the plinth small white marble columns with foliate capitals and moulded bases. On the columns rests a moulded ogee arch executed in freestone, crowned by a white marble cross-flower. On the pointed-arch-shaped spandrel fields between the columns white marble plates. On the plate at the front the inscription 'I take you from / a foreign / dwelling place / to give you a / fixed dwelling / you were / strangers / on earth / in heaven / you will be / inhabitants / St. Aug. in ps. 148'. On this plinth a rectangular base on which a white marble figure representing a female figure with a cross to her right which she grasps with her right hand. In her hand a crown. Her left hand rests on an open book that stands on a small, moulded plinth to her left. On the book the inscription 'V 360 (?) / (over the two pages:) Acts of the Apostles / (on the left page:) Through many / afflictions / we must / enter / (on the right page:) into / the Kingdom / of God'. Bottom right on the slab the signature 'L. Petit'.
Valuation.
The monument is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social and spiritual development, in particular Catholic grave culture. It is of importance because of the typology and uniqueness of the representation. It is moreover of importance as part of a larger whole that is of cultural-historical, architectural and urban planning importance as the first Catholic cemetery of Tilburg.
