Inleiding.
Het Neogotische GRAFMONUMENT voor W.P.A. Mutsaers op de katholieke begraafplaats aan de Bredaseweg werd in 1908 vervaardigd door de Bossche beeldhouwer M. van Bokhoven (1852-1929). W.P.A. Mutsaers (1833-1907) was textielfabrikant en werd in 1868 gekozen tot lid van de Provinciale Staten. In 1874 werd hij lid van Gedeputeerde Staten waarna hij in 1889 lid werd van de Tweede Kamer. Van 1901 tot 1907 was hij burgemeester van Tilburg.
Omschrijving.
Grafmonument bestaande uit een tombe en een van rijk beeldhouwwerk voorziene opstand. Het grafmonument bestaat uit een op een hardstenen tombe geplaatste, schuin oplopende zerk met geprofileerde rand. Op de zerk, gedeeld in twee velden, aan de linkerzijde het opschrift 'De H Ed gestr. heer / Wilhelmus Petrus / Adrianus Mutsaers / Burgemr van Tilburg / Lid der provinciale e / oud lid der Gedeput. / Staten v N Brab en / Tweede Kam Stn Gen / Pres vd bijz raad der / ver St. Vincentius a / Paulo lid van het / kerkbest par Heike / ridder Ned. Leeuw / Command Pius orde / geheim kamerheer met / kap en degen van Z.H. geb. .. aug. 1833 Tilburg 14 feb 1907'. Op het veld aan de rechterzijde het opschrift 'Mevrouw / Maria Francisca Jacoba Smits / echtgent van W.P.A. / Mutsaers wed v wijle / Aloys F.J. Bogaers / mede opr e 1ste preste / d St. Elisabeths Vereen / Tilburg lid d derde / orde v St. Franciscus / bestuurslid der ver / van het H. Sacrament / versierd door ZH m / het eere kruis in goud / pro Ecci et Pontif / geb. Breda 28 (/) feb 1840 / Tilburg .. oct 1906'1. Aan het hoofdeinde van de zerk staat een rechthoekige hardstenen sokkel met geprofileerde rand. Op de sokkel een gebeeldhouwde opstand. Het materiaal waaruit het beeldhouwwerk is vervaardigd is Franse kalksteen, dan wel kunststeen. De gebeeldhouwde opstand bestaat uit een ingezwenkte basis met aan beide zijden liggende fasces (roedenbundels). Deze fasces komen ook voor op het familiewapen. Op deze basis een rechthoekige opbouw met driezijdige uiteinden met op de voorzijde het wapenschild van de familie Mutsaers (drie roedenbundels op veld met keper) omgeven door een lauwerkrans. Aan de onderzijde van de lauwerkrans hangen gebeeldhouwde onderscheidingen, waaronder een pauselijke. Op de hoeken van de opstand twee beelden, geplaatst op met bladornament gesierde consoles. Aan de linkerzijde de H. Elisabeth van Thüringen, gekroond met in de handen een bos rozen, rechts de H. Vincentius a Paulo met op de linkerarm het Christuskind. De opbouw wordt bekroond door een geprofileerde dekplaat waarop een Keltisch kruis op samengestelde voet met onder andere florale reliëfs. Op de kruising het XP-monogram, op de uiteinden van de armen een floraal motief in vierkant. Op de cirkel die de kruising omgeeft het opschrift 'PER / CRUCE / AD / LEGEM'. Rechts op de sokkel de in een kader gebeitelde signatuur 'M. van Bokhoven & Zn / 's-Bosch. 12-2-1908'. Het graf wordt omgeven door een opstaande hardstenen band ingevuld met grint. Eertijds vormde deze band de basis voor een nu verdwenen smeedijzeren hek tussen geprofileerde hoekpalen.
Waardering.
Het monument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en politieke ontwikkeling, het herinnerd aan personen die nauw betrokken waren bij de emancipatie van Zuid-Nederland. Het object is tevens van belang vanwege de typologie en de zeldzaamheid als werkstuk van het atelier M. van Bokhoven & Zn uit Den Bosch. Bovendien is het object van belang als onderdeel van een groter geheel dat cultuurhistorisch, architectuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig van belang is als de eerste katholieke begraafplaats van Tilburg.

Grave monument consisting of a tomb and a superstructure provided with rich sculptural work. The grave monument consists of a sloping slab with profiled edge placed on a limestone tomb. On the slab, divided into two fields, on the left side the inscription 'The H Ed gestr. gentleman / Wilhelmus Petrus / Adrianus Mutsaers / Mayor of Tilburg / Member of the provincial e / former member of the States-Deputy / of N Brab and / Second Chamber Stn Gen / President of the special council of / the ver St. Vincentius a / Paulo member of the / church board par Heike / knight Neth. On the field on the right side the inscription 'Mrs / Maria Francisca Jacoba Smits / wife of W.P.A. / Mutsaers widow of the late / Aloys F.J. Bogaers / co-founder and 1st president / of the St. Elisabeth's Association / Tilburg member of the third / order of St. Francis / board member of the association / of the H. Sacrament / decorated by ZH with / the honor cross in gold / pro Ecci et Pontif / born Breda 28 (/) Feb 1840 / Tilburg .. Oct 1906'1. At the head end of the slab stands a rectangular limestone pedestal with profiled edge. On the pedestal a sculptured superstructure. The material from which the sculptural work is manufactured is French limestone, or artificial stone. The sculptured superstructure consists of a recessed base with fasces (rods bundles) lying on both sides. These fasces also appear on the family coat of arms. On this base a rectangular superstructure with three-sided ends with on the front the coat of arms shield of the Mutsaers family (three rods bundles on field with chevron) surrounded by a laurel wreath. At the bottom of the laurel wreath hang sculptured decorations, including a papal one. On the corners of the superstructure two figures, placed on consoles decorated with leaf ornament. On the left side St. Elizabeth of Thuringia, crowned with in her hands a bunch of roses, on the right St. Vincentius a Paulo with on the left arm the Christ Child. The superstructure is crowned by a profiled coping on which a Celtic cross on composite foot with among other things floral reliefs. At the crossing the XP monogram, at the ends of the arms a floral motif in square. On the circle enclosing the crossing the inscription 'PER / CRUCE / AD / LEGEM'. On the right of the pedestal the signature chiselled in a frame 'M. van Bokhoven & Zn / 's-Bosch. 12-2-1908'. The grave is surrounded by a raised limestone band filled with gravel. Formerly this band formed the basis for a now disappeared wrought-iron fence between profiled corner bollards.
Valuation.
The monument is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social and political development, it commemorates persons closely involved in the emancipation of South Netherlands. The object is furthermore of importance due to the typology and rarity as a work from the workshop M. van Bokhoven & Zn from Den Bosch. Furthermore the object is of importance as part of a larger whole that is culturally, architecturally and urban-historically significant as the first Catholic cemetery of Tilburg.
