Inleiding.
Het GRAFMONUMENT van het echtpaar Brouwers-Sopers op de katholieke begraafplaats aan de Bredaseweg werd omstreeks 1933 vervaardigd in het atelier van A. Wesel te Tilburg. P.J.J.C. Brouwers was eigenaar van de N.V. J. Brouwers Lakenfabrieken, opgericht door zijn grootvader, welke hij samen met zijn broer beheerde.
Omschrijving.
Grafmonument bestaande uit een gebeeldhouwde opstand tussen twee oprijzende wangen. Het geheel in zandsteen uitgevoerde, overigens op een hardstenen kelderzerk geplaatste grafmonument, heeft elementen van de Art Nouveau. Op de kelderzerk zijn twee naar achter oprijzende wangen geplaatst, bekroond door een ronde top met gestyleerd, gelaagd bladmotief. Op de zijden, onder de toppen, een gebeeldhouwde lauwerkrans aan een haak. Aan de voorzijde van de wangen een lage afgeronde hoekpaal. Aan het hoofdeinde, tussen de wangen, een sokkel waarop een gebeeldhouwde opstand is geplaatst. Op de sokkel het opschrift 'Hier rust / mevr. Maria Joh. Corn. Sopers / geb. te 's Bosch 15 mei 1880 / overl. te Amsterdam 13 febr. 1917 / echtg. v.d. weledel. geb. heer Petrus J.J.C. Brouwers / geb. te Tilburg 29 nov. 1874 / overl. te Uccle (Brussel) 26 nov. 1933 / echtg. van mevrouw Theodora van Oorschot'. Op de sokkel een gebeeldhouwde opstand in de vorm van een absidioolnis waarin in hoogreliëf een geknielde vrouw, op de rug gezien, met de handen gevouwen opgeheven naar het boven haar afgebeelde kruis. Aan de achterzijde is de nis herhaald in de vorm van een rondboogvormig spaarveld. Op de paal rechtsvoor is aan de voorzijde nog leesbaar de signatuur A. W(es)el'.
Waardering.
Het monument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en geestelijke ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de katholieke grafcultuur. Het object is tevens van belang vanwege de typologische zeldzaamheid door de hier toegepaste uitzonderlijke vormgeving in combinatie met de iconografie. Het object is bovendien van belang als onderdeel van een groter geheel dat cultuurhistorisch, architectuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig van belang is als de eerste katholieke begraafplaats van Tilburg.

Grave monument consisting of a sculptured superstructure between two rising flanges. The entire monument, executed in sandstone and otherwise placed on a limestone burial slab, has elements of Art Nouveau. On the burial slab two flanges rising backwards are placed, crowned by a round top with stylised, layered leaf motif. On the sides, beneath the tops, a sculptured laurel wreath on a hook. At the front of the flanges a low rounded corner bollard. At the head end, between the flanges, a pedestal on which a sculptured superstructure is placed. On the pedestal the inscription 'Here rests / Mrs Maria Joh. Corn. Sopers / born in 's Bosch 15 May 1880 / died in Amsterdam 13 Feb. 1917 / wife of the well-born gentleman Petrus J.J.C. Brouwers / born in Tilburg 29 Nov. 1874 / died in Uccle (Brussels) 26 Nov. 1933 / married to Mrs Theodora van Oorschot'. On the pedestal a sculptured superstructure in the form of an absidiole in which in high relief a kneeling woman, seen from behind, with hands folded raised towards the cross depicted above her. On the rear the niche is repeated in the form of a semi-circular spandrel. On the right front bollard, on the front side, the signature A. W(es)el is still legible.
Valuation.
The monument is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social and spiritual development, in particular Catholic burial culture. The object is furthermore of importance due to typological rarity through the exceptional design applied here in combination with the iconography. The object is moreover of importance as part of a larger whole that is culturally, architecturally and urban-historically significant as the first Catholic cemetery of Tilburg.
