Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Op de katholieke begraafplaats aan de Bredaseweg bevindt zich het GRAFMONUMENT in Neogotische stijl uit ca. 1905 voor de textielfabrikant Johannes Ludovicus Donders en zijn echtgenote Anna Aldegonda Janssen. Het beeld op het grafmonument werd vervaardigd door de Eindhovense beeldhouwer Jan Custers welke tezamen met zijn broer Fons sinds ca. 1895 te Eindhoven een atelier voor kerkelijke kunst dreef.
Omschrijving.
Het grafmonument bestaat uit een zerk met sokkel waarop een gebeeldhouwde figuur. Hardstenen grafmonument met neogotische elementen bestaande uit een kelderzerk, waarop een tombe met licht hellende zijden en een afgeknotte voorzijde waarop in reliëf een kruis en ranken. Op de vlakken het nog slechts deels leesbare opschrift 'de H. Johannes Ludovicus Donders / en / Mm. Anna Aldegonde Janssen / ... gelukkig ... drie en vijftig jaren / in het jaar onzes heren / 1905'. Voor deze tombe een hellende steen met in reliëf het opschrift 'Die hen gekend hebben spreken nog / met lof van hun goed en edel hart / H. Ambrosius'. Aan het voeteneinde van de zerk een kleine plantenbak met geprofileerde rand. Aan het hoofdeinde een sokkel waarop een geheel in zandsteen gebeeldhouwde rotspartij met schild (opschrift onleesbaar). Op de rots een staande vrouwenfiguur in lang gewaad met de linkerhand voor de borst, de rechterhand om het staande kruis geslagen dat rechts van haar staat. Op de kruising van de kruisarmen het opschrift 'In hoc signo vinces'. Links op de rotspartij de signatuur 'J. Custers'. Het grafmonument rust op een fundament van afgeschuinde bakstenen met op de hoeken hardstenen elementen.
Waardering.
Het monument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en geestelijke ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de katholieke grafcultuur. Het object is van belang vanwege de typologie en kunsthistorisch als voorbeeld van het werk van de kunstenaar. Het object is tevens van belang als onderdeel van een groter geheel dat cultuurhistorisch, architectuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig van belang is als de eerste katholieke begraafplaats in Tilburg.

On the Catholic cemetery at the Bredaseweg is located the GRAVE MONUMENT in Neo-Gothic style from around 1905 for textile manufacturer Johannes Ludovicus Donders and his wife Anna Aldegonda Janssen. The figure on the grave monument was made by Eindhoven sculptor Jan Custers who, together with his brother Fons, ran a workshop for ecclesiastical art in Eindhoven from around 1895.
Description.
The grave monument consists of a slab with plinth on which a sculpted figure stands. Hardstone grave monument with Neo-Gothic elements consisting of a cellar slab on which a tomb with slightly sloping sides and a truncated front on which in relief a cross and foliage. On the surfaces the still only partly legible inscription 'of St. Johannes Ludovicus Donders / and / Mm. Anna Aldegonde Janssen / ... happy ... fifty three years / in the year of our Lord / 1905'. In front of this tomb a sloping stone with in relief the inscription 'Those who knew them still speak / with praise of their good and noble heart / St. Ambrose'. At the foot end of the slab a small planter with profiled edge. At the head end a plinth on which an entirely sandstone sculpted rocky formation with shield (inscription illegible). On the rock a standing female figure in long garment with the left hand before the breast, the right hand around the standing cross which stands to her right. At the crossing of the cross arms the inscription 'In hoc signo vinces'. To the left on the rocky formation the signature 'J. Custers'. The grave monument rests on a foundation of bevelled brickwork with hardstone elements at the corners.
Valuation.
The monument is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a special expression of a social and spiritual development, in particular Catholic grave culture. The object is of importance because of its typology and artistically as an example of the work of the artist. The object is also of importance as part of a larger entity that is of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning importance as Tilburg's first Catholic cemetery.
