Inleiding.
Op de katholieke begraafplaats aan de Bredaseweg staat het GRAFMONUMENT van Carolina van Kalken. Later werden in het graf ook andere leden van de familie bijgezet. Carolina van Kalken dreef samen met haar zoon Gus een atelier in kerkornamenten, de fa. Janssen & Co. Ook haar dochters waren bij deze firma werkzaam. De firma bemiddelde bij de levering van enkele gietijzeren heiligenbeelden voor het hek van de begraafplaats en was zelf schenker van de engelen terzijde van de hoofdingang welke als eerste beelden werden geplaatst. Het grafmonument is waarschijnlijk afkomstig uit Zuid-Nederland of België en werd omstreeks 1895 geplaatst.
Omschrijving.
Het grafmonument, bestaande uit een sokkel met opschrift waarop een engel is geplaatst, is geheel van gietijzer vervaardigd. De sokkel is inclusief decoraties en opschriften in één keer gegoten. De engel is apart vervaardigd en later aan de sokkel bevestigd. Het grafmonument bestaat uit een smalle, naar boven verjongende sokkel met afgeschuinde hoeken op een vierkant grondplan. Op de sokkel een engel, de rechterhand opgeheven, in de linkerhand een vierpas waarbinnen zijn afgebeeld de symbolen van Geloof (kruis), Hoop (anker) en Liefde (een gekroond hart). De engel is afgebeeld, staande op een wolkenpartij. Aan de voorzijde van de sokkel in reliëf het opschrift 'Hic jacet / Carolina Maria / van Kalken / geb. Janssen / te Tilburg geboren / 11 maart 1840 / aldaar overleden / 22 januari 1895 / R.I.P.'. Boven dit opschrift, in een lauwerkrans, het Alpha- en Omegateken. Op de afgeschuinde hoeken aan de onderzijde links een rond medaillon met in reliëf een gevleugelde zandloper, rechts een portretkopje. Aan de rechterzijde en achterkant zijn op de sokkel twee hardstenen platen bevestigd. De opschriften luiden respectievelijk 'Sophia J.D. / Van Kalken / *24 jan. 1867 / +15 nov. 1946' en 'Mathilda A.M. / Van Kalken / *25 mrt. 1876 / +2 jan. 1958. Het graf is afgebakend door een hardstenen rand.
Waardering.
Het monument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en geestelijke ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de katholieke grafcultuur. Het grafmonument is vooral van belang vanwege het materiaalgebruik, namelijk gietijzer, en het toepassen ervan voor een dergelijk object. Het werd grotendeels in één keer gegoten en is derhalve een unicum. Het object is tevens van belang als onderdeel van, en nauw verbonden met het ontstaan van een groter geheel dat cultuurhistorisch, architectuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig van belang is als de eerste katholieke begraafplaats van Tilburg.

On the Catholic cemetery at the Bredaseweg stands the GRAVE MONUMENT of Carolina van Kalken. Later other family members were also buried in the grave. Carolina van Kalken ran a workshop for church ornaments together with her son Gus, the firm Janssen & Co. Her daughters also worked for this firm. The firm mediated in the delivery of several cast-iron holy statues for the cemetery fence and was itself a donor of the angels at the sides of the main entrance which were the first statues to be placed. Description.
The grave monument, consisting of a plinth with inscription on which an angel is placed, is entirely made of cast iron. The plinth is, including decorations and inscriptions, cast in one piece. The angel was made separately and later attached to the plinth. The grave monument consists of a narrow, tapering upwards plinth with bevelled corners on a square ground plan. On the plinth an angel, right hand raised, in the left hand a quatrefoil within which are depicted the symbols of Faith (cross), Hope (anchor) and Charity (a crowned heart). The angel is depicted standing on a cloud formation. On the front of the plinth in relief the inscription 'Hic jacet / Carolina Maria / van Kalken / born Janssen / born in Tilburg / 11 March 1840 / died there / 22 January 1895 / R.I.P.'. Above this inscription, in a laurel wreath, the Alpha and Omega symbol. On the bevelled corners at the bottom left a round medallion with in relief a winged hourglass, right a portrait head. On the right side and back two hardstone plates are affixed to the plinth. The inscriptions read respectively 'Sophia J.D. / Van Kalken / *24 Jan. 1867 / +15 Nov. 1946' and 'Mathilda A.M. / Van Kalken / *25 Mar. 1876 / +2 Jan. 1958'. The grave is bounded by a hardstone border.
Valuation.
The monument is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a special expression of a social and spiritual development, in particular Catholic grave culture. The grave monument is of particular importance because of the use of material, namely cast iron, and its application for such an object. It was largely cast in one piece and is therefore a unique example. The object is also of importance as part of, and closely connected to the creation of, a larger entity that is of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning importance as Tilburg's first Catholic cemetery.
