Inleiding.
Het GRAFMONUMENT van Marietje Kessels werd omstreeks 1900 vervaardigd in het atelier van V. Barette te Tilburg in Eclectische stijl. Marietje Kessels, dochter van M. Kessels, directeur van de Nederlandsche Fabriek voor Muziekinstrumenten werd in 1900 vermoord aangetroffen op de gewelven van de voormalige kerk aan de Noordhoekring te Tilburg. De zaak kreeg, door het feit dat het de moord op een kind in een kerk betrof, nationale aandacht. Getroffen door de wandaad werd het monument destijds uit onder andere giften van de Tilburgse bevolking gefinancierd. Ondanks een zeer intensief onderzoek werd de moordzaak, tot ca. 1995, nooit opgelost. Sindsdien verschenen er over de zaak vele publicaties en werd er een theaterstuk aan gewijd dat in diverse theaters in Nederland te zien was.
Omschrijving.
Het grafmonument bestaat uit een tombe waarop een gebeeldhouwde figuur. Op een hardstenen kelderzerk een oplopende tombe waarop een witmarmeren plaat met opschrift 'Aan / Maria Catharina Wilhelmina / Kessels / geb. 2 maart 1889 / overl. 22 augustus 1900 / uit innige deelnemning / Ik ben gestorven / om voor God te leven'. Aan het hoofdeinde een opstand bestaande uit een sokkel waarop een ruw kruis op een gebeeldhouwde rotspartij. Tegen het rotsblok een gebeeldhouwde ruwe plaquette met opschrift 'Ave Crux / Spes Unica'. Een in witmarmer gebeeldhouwde meisjesfiguur heeft, kruipend tegen de rots, haar armen rond het kruis geslagen. Op de hoeken van de kelderzerk geprofileerde en gekanteelde palen waartussen een ketting van doornschakels. Op de rechterpaal de signatuur 'V. Barette Tilburg'.
Waardering.
Het monument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en geestelijke ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de katholieke grafcultuur. Het is een qua typologie uniek grafmonument dat refereert aan een historische gebeurtenis die zowel regionaal als nationaal veel indruk maakte. Het monument heeft, mede door de schenkingen om tot de oprichting ervan te komen, tevens een belangrijke historische relatie met de stad. Het grafmonument maakt bovendien deel uit van een groter geheel dat cultuurhistorisch, architectuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig van belang is als de eerste katholieke begraafplaats van Tilburg.

The GRAVE MONUMENT of Marietje Kessels was made around 1900 in the workshop of V. Barette in Tilburg in Eclectic style. Marietje Kessels, daughter of M. On a hardstone cellar slab a rising tomb with a white marble plate inscribed 'To / Maria Catharina Wilhelmina / Kessels / born 2 March 1889 / died 22 August 1900 / in heartfelt sympathy / I have died / to live for God'. At the head end a structure consisting of a plinth on which a rough cross on a sculpted rocky formation. Against the stone block a roughly sculpted marble plaque inscribed 'Ave Crux / Spes Unica'. A white marble sculpted figure of a girl, crawling against the rock, has her arms wrapped around the cross. At the corners of the cellar slab profiled and castellated posts connected by a chain of thorn links. On the right post the signature 'V. Barette Tilburg'.

The monument is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a special expression of a social and spiritual development, in particular Catholic grave culture.
