Inleiding
De GRAFTOMBE van de familie Van Meeuwen is gelegen in het midden van het onder complexonderdeel 3 omschreven kavel van de Rooms-Katholieke afdeling binnen de Algemene Begraafplaats. De graftombe markeert de graven van J.M. Eduard van Meeuwen (1802 - 1873) en diens echtgenote Cornelia Theresia Hanssen (1806 - 1852). De uit 1853 daterende graftombe toont een classicistische detaillering.
Omschrijving
De hardstenen graftombe heeft een rechthoekige grondslag. Het grafmonument is opgebouwd uit een lage basis, een iets hogere sokkel met door klimopbegroeiing onleesbaar geworden inscripties, en de eigenlijke tombe. Deze wordt aan de bovenzijde afgedekt door twee elkaar kruisende zadeldakjes, waarboven een bekroning in de vorm van een bol met een kruis. Boven de zijden van de tombe frontons met symbolische voorstellingen in laagreliëf. Boven deze frontons palmetvormige akroterien. Op de sokkel zijn op de lange zijden in reliëf vier kronen afgebeeld. Op de lange zijden van de tombe vinden we in het midden het wapen van de familie Van Meeuwen: dit toont drie meeuwen en drie vijfbladige rozen. Aan weerszijden hiervan cartouches met daarin de grafschriften van J.M. Eduard van Meeuwen en diens echtgenote Cornelia Theresia Hanssen. De reliëfs en grafschriften van beide lange zijden zijn identiek. Op de korte zijden van de tombe zijn urnen met rouwsluiers afgebeeld. Ook in de frontons zijn symbolische voorstellingen te vinden: boven de lange zijden van de tombe een liggend kruis met een palmtak en een krans. Boven de noordelijke korte zijde is een gevleugelde zandloper weergegeven, boven de zuidelijke zijde twee gekruiste fakkels.
Waardering
Het object is van algemeen belang. Het bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een geestelijke ontwikkeling, als voorbeeld van de laat 19de-eeuwse grafcultuur. Het bezit kunsthistorische waarde door het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en ornamentiek en door hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten. The FUNERARY TOMB of the Van Meeuwen family is located in the middle of the plot of the Roman Catholic section within the Algemene Begraafplaats described under Complex Component 3. The funerary tomb marks the graves of J.M. Eduard van Meeuwen (1802 - 1873) and his wife Cornelia Theresia Hanssen (1806 - 1852). The funerary tomb dating from 1853 displays classical detailing.
Description
The stone funerary tomb has a rectangular ground plan. The monument is constructed from a low base, a slightly higher plinth with inscriptions that have become illegible through ivy growth, and the actual tomb. This is covered on the top by two intersecting roof gables, above which a crowning in the form of a sphere with a cross. Above the sides of the tomb pediments with symbolic representations in low relief. Above these pediments palmette-shaped acroteria. On the plinth on the long sides four crowns are depicted in relief. On the long sides of the tomb we find in the centre the arms of the Van Meeuwen family: this shows three gulls and three five-petalled roses. On either side of this cartouches containing the epitaphs of J.M. Eduard van Meeuwen and his wife Cornelia Theresia Hanssen. The reliefs and epitaphs of both long sides are identical. On the short sides of the tomb urns with mourning veils are depicted. Symbolic representations are also found in the pediments: above the long sides of the tomb a reclining cross with a palm branch and a wreath. Above the northern short side a winged hourglass is depicted, above the southern side two crossed torches.
