Inleiding
Het ijzeren BEGRAAFPLAATSHEK met twee ingangen werd geplaatst in 1858, ter vervanging van een oudere gemetselde muur met houten hek. Het hek, dat werd opgetrokken in een Traditioneel-Ambachtelijke vormentaal, schermt de Algemene Begraafplaats af van de St. Elisabethstraat.
Omschrijving
Het hek voor de Algemene Begraafplaats bestaat uit vierkante pijlers met hiertussen lage, door ezelsruggen afgesloten muurtjes. Tussen de pijlers smeedijzeren hekken. De pijlers hebben een iets bredere basis, aan de bovenzijde afgesloten door een hardstenen plaat. Het middengedeelte van de pijlers springt licht vooruit. Aan de bovenzijde een hardstenen afsluiting, waarop later hardstenen bollen (1862) zijn geplaatst. Aan weerszijde van de ingang naar de algemene begraafplaats bredere en iets hogere pijlers. Aan de voorzijde hiervan twee hardstenen platen met een doodshoofd met gekruiste beenderen: hieronder is de tekst "Memento/Mori" te lezen.
Waardering
Het begraafplaatshek is van algemeen belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een cultuurhistorische ontwikkeling: het ontstaan van begraafplaatsen buiten de bebouwde kom als gevolg van een overheidsbesluit van 1829. Het begraafplaatshek vormt een essentieel onderdeel van het begraafplaatscomplex en bezit als zodanig ensemblewaarde. Het object is ten slotte van belang vanwege gaafheid.

The iron CEMETERY FENCE with two entrances was installed in 1858, replacing an older brick wall with wooden fence. The fence, which was erected in a Traditional-Craft formal language, screens the General Cemetery from the St. Elisabethstraat.

The fence for the General Cemetery consists of square pillars with between them low walls capped by saddle-back copings. Between the pillars wrought-iron fences. The pillars have a slightly wider base, closed at the top by a hardstone slab. The central section of the pillars projects slightly forward. At the top a hardstone finish, on which hardstone balls were later placed (1862). On either side of the entrance to the general cemetery wider and slightly taller pillars. On the front of these two hardstone slabs with a skull and crossbones: below this the text "Memento/Mori" can be read.
