Inleiding
Op de noordoostelijke hoek van het als Complexonderdeel III omschreven kavel van de Rooms-Katholieke afdeling op de Algemene Begraafplaats bevindt zich het GRAFMONUMENT van de beeldhouwer J.A. van de Ven (1800-1866) en diens echtgenote C.M.T. van den Eijnden (1825-1870). Het grafmonument, dat een classicistische detaillering vertoont, dateert uit omstreeks 1866. Het grafmonument is recentelijk gerestaureerd (oktober 1988).
Omschrijving
Het grafmonument heeft een vierkante hardstenen basis. Op de hoeken hiervan vier hardstenen hekpalen met afgeronde koppen. Hiertussen lagere octogonale hekpaaltjes bekroond met bollen. Tussen de hekpalen een smeedijzeren ketting. Boven de basis een hardstenen tombe, met enigszins uitkragende dekplaat. Hierboven verrijst een zandstenen monument, dat is opgebouwd uit een door frontons bekroonde sokkel, met daarboven een achthoekig afgevlakt, naar boven taps toelopend kruis. Op de vier zijden van de sokkel zijn marmeren platen met inscripties aangebracht. Op de oostelijke zijde het grafschrift voor de beeldhouwer J.A. van de Ven en diens echtgenote C.M.T. van den Eijnden. De inscripties op de overige drie zijden van het beeld zijn vermeldingen van beelden van Johannes van der Ven.
Op de noordelijke zijde de tekst EVA-PIETA-MADONA-RUTH-ST.JAN-ABEL, op de westelijke zijde CHRISTUS-JOANUS DE DOPER-TWAALF APOSTELEN (de beelden voor het hoogkoor van de Sint Jan in 's-Hertogenbosch) en op de zuidelijke zijde LE REFUS DE TREPIED D'HELENA PAR BIAS-PHILOCLETUS-NARCISSUS-GENIUS. Op de frontons boven de sokkel zijn afbeeldingen in laagrelif aangebracht: een lauwerkrans (oost), een hamer en beitel (noord), een zandloper (west) en twee gekruiste fakkels (zuid). Tussen de frontons zijn palmetvormige akroterien aangebracht.
Waardering
Het object is van algemeen belang. Het bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als uitdrukking van een geestelijke ontwikkeling en als herinnering aan de Bossche beeldhouwer J. van de Ven. Het bezit kunsthistorische waarde vanwege de bijzondere ornamentiek en bijzonder materiaalgebruik en vanwege de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten. On the northeast corner of the plot of the Roman Catholic section on the Algemene Begraafplaats described as Complex Component III is the FUNERARY MONUMENT of the sculptor J.A. van de Ven (1800-1866) and his wife C.M.T. van den Eijnden (1825-1870). The funerary monument, which displays classical detailing, dates from circa 1866. The funerary monument was recently restored (October 1988).
Description
The funerary monument has a square stone base. On the corners of this four stone gate piers with rounded tops. Between these lower octagonal gate posts crowned with spheres. Between the piers a wrought-iron chain. Above the base a stone tomb, with a somewhat projecting cover slab. Above this rises a sandstone monument, which is constructed from a plinth crowned by pediments, with above it an octagonally truncated, tapering upwards cross. On the four sides of the plinth marble plaques with inscriptions are applied. On the eastern side the epitaph for the sculptor J.A. van de Ven and his wife C.M.T. van den Eijnden. The inscriptions on the other three sides of the monument are references to sculptures by Johannes van der Ven.
On the northern side the text EVA-PIETA-MADONA-RUTH-ST.JAN-ABEL, on the western side CHRISTUS-JOANUS THE BAPTIST-TWELVE APOSTLES (the sculptures for the high choir of the Sint Jan in 's-Hertogenbosch) and on the southern side LE REFUS DE TREPIED D'HELENA PAR BIAS-PHILOCLETUS-NARCISSUS-GENIUS. On the pediments above the plinth are low-relief representations applied: a laurel wreath (east), a hammer and chisel (north), an hourglass (west) and two crossed torches (south). Between the pediments palmette-shaped acroteria are applied.
Valuation
The object is of general importance. It possesses cultural-historical value as an expression of a spiritual development and as a memorial to the 's-Hertogenbosch sculptor J. van de Ven. It possesses artistic value because of its distinctive ornamental detail and particular use of materials and because of its exceptional aesthetic qualities. The object has ensemble value as an essential component of a larger whole, which is of national cultural-historical importance. The object is of importance because of its integrity.
