Inleiding.

Introduction.

The R.C. Neo-gothic H. Maria Boodschap CHURCH at no. 107 was built in 1911 according to the design of architect Jacques van Groenendael. The church suffered severe war damage in 1944: the tower was largely destroyed and vaults collapsed. By 1958 the restoration was completed. The restoration took place largely in the old manner, but with modifications to the tower.

Description.

The three-aisled cruciform church with a roof turret has a west tower with square base and a five-sided closed choir of two bays flanked by side chapels. The nave comprises three bays. The facades are built in machine-made brickwork with buttresses with offsets. The brown brick is alternated by decorative bands in yellow brick, a round-arch frieze and a dentil moulding below the gutter. The pointed-arch windows are provided with yellow brick tracery. On the gabled roof of the nave, the lean-to roofs of the side aisles and the spires of the tower and chapels lie slates in interlocking bond. The height and width of the windows vary according to their location. At the apse they are tall and narrow, the side chapels at the apse and tower have small low windows. The pointed-arch windows of the clerestory are wider than those in the side aisle.

The transepts each have a large and wide pointed-arch window with above it a series of rising blind pointed-arch windows with tracery. The crossing is provided with a high open-worked spire. The main entrance to the church is in the tower. This has right-angled buttresses with offset. The oak wing doors in basket-arch form have heavy wrought-iron fittings in symmetrical curved forms. The entrance, the blind round-arch arcade and the pointed-arch window above it are all enclosed by a pointed-arch moulding of yellow brick. The upper articulation has a continuous cornice line with two sound holes, above which the strongly pinched octagonal spire. The bell section was greatly simplified during the restoration of war damage. The interior space is divided by columns with leaf capitals and clustered columns at the crossing. The columns are executed in hardstone, the capitals in sandstone. The pilasters, shelves and pointed arches between the columns as well as the window mouldings leave the brick exposed which is otherwise white-plastered. The cross vaults are built in mortar. The clerestory is provided with a blind triforium below the windows. Directly behind the entrance is the narrow pointed-arch organ gallery. The church possesses various finely executed sculptures and altars, which date from shortly after the church was built. Most striking are the limestone high altar executed in late neo-gothic style in the apse and the St. Joseph and Mary altar in the side chapels. Both of the latter-mentioned sculptures are illuminated by the figurative stained-glass windows preserved there. At the Mary altar the first stone is placed "23 maii 1911". The limestone neo-gothic communion rail at the Joseph altar originally comes from a church at Ginneken. In the virtually round space next to the tower is the baptismal chapel, closed off by a wrought-iron grille. In the chapel is a polychrome statue of the Christ Child. At the entrance stands a Holy Family group, also polychrome. Of the other sculptures from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries placed in the nave a standing Madonna, a St. Aloysius, a Sacred Heart statue of Jesus and a Sacred Heart Mary should be mentioned. At the front the church grounds are closed off by a cast and wrought-iron ornamental grille with spires and knobs, dating from the time of construction. A Sacred Heart statue is also placed in front of the choir. The latter falls outside the National Monument protection.

Valuation.

The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical significance as an example of a spiritual development, in particular the development of Catholicism in the late nineteenth century and the revival of existing devotions. It is also of architectural-historical importance because of its place in the oeuvre of the architect. The complex has ensemble value because of its location, connected with the development of the church village and because of the manner of its arrangement. The complex is of particular significance for the appearance of the village and because of the high quality of the built environment in historical-spatial relation to the road structure. The building has a high degree of integrity, also in the interior.
