Inleiding.

Introduction.

The O.L. VROUW VAN ZEGGE CHAPEL was built in sober Neo-Gothic style in 1922 after designs by architect Jacques van Groenendael. The chapel has a pilgrimage tradition dating back to the fifteenth century. The chapel built in 1922 matches the main form of the preceding chapel.

Description.

The single-aisle chapel with a nave of three bays is provided with a west tower on a square basis, a three-sided closed transept and a five-sided choir termination. The gabled roofs of nave and transept and the contracted octagonal tower spire are covered with slate in Maas bond. The facades are built of machine-made brick and provided with buttresses with offsets, between which pointed arch windows with stained glass. The tower with main entrance is situated on the street side. The tower is built as a building mass projecting slightly from the masonry and thus forms a pointed arch portico for the oak panelled door with wrought-iron fittings. On either side of this a small pointed arch window and at the corners of the nave buttresses. Below the spire the tower has on all sides a blind pointed arch. On the tower spire a worked wrought-iron cross has been placed. The northern transept has windows only, the southern one still has a second oak entrance door with ornamental wrought iron, as a fanlight a pointed arch with brick fork tracery.

The interior is built up in fair-faced masonry with white-painted surfaces on which floral motifs. The floor is tiled in dark red with a chequered border pattern. The brick herringbone vaults are likewise decorated with leaf and flower motifs. Between the pilasters supporting the band ribs there is a plastered wainscoting. This was decorated with stencil paintings, but was painted over white around 1992. The stained glass windows are provided with figurative representations in star-shaped medallions. These contain scenes from the life of Jesus and Mary, such as the birth of Mary and the Passion of Christ, the Resurrection, the Assumption of Mary and her coronation in heaven. Attention is centrally directed to an image of the Madonna and Child under a glass dome. It is a seventeenth-century image of Flemish origin. The silver ex-votos from the previous and this century have recently been mostly transferred to the church situated opposite the chapel.

Valuation.

The chapel is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as an example of spiritual development, particularly the development of Catholicism in the late nineteenth century and the revival of existing devotions. It is also of architectural-historical importance because of its place in the oeuvre of the architect. The complex has ensemble value because of its situation, connected with the development of the church village and because of the manner of arrangement. The complex is of particular significance for the appearance of the village and because of the high quality of the building in historical-spatial relation to the road structure. The building has a high degree of integrity.
