Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Samen met rector A.M.

Description
Introduction.
Large chapel in Neo-Gothic style built in 1908 after designs by architect Petrus Johannes van Genk (Bergen op Zoom). The commission was given by the fifth superior-general Mère Xavier Schutjes. Together with rector A.M. Woestenberg she laid the foundation stone. The contractor was Mattheus Bakkeren (Princenhage). The large chapel lies free in the courtyard with the exception of the north-east side, which borders on the small chapel.
Description.
Single-aisle cruciform chapel with lower choir with five-sided closure, under saddle and hipped roofs with an octagonal crossing tower. On either side of the choir section against the transept a sacristy under hipped roof. All roofs are covered with natural stone slates. Cross flowers on the gable ends. The external superstructure consists of a purplish-red machine-made brick laid in cross-bond, at the corners provided with heavy buttresses with offsets. The horizontal bands, wall cappings and tracery in windows are of French limestone. The nave is four bays long. In each bay three lancet windows with a round window above. In the gable ends of the transept seven lancet windows with round windows above featuring four- and eight-lobe motifs. In the top gable two lancet windows. In the transept gables on the side of the choir bay high-placed rose windows with eight-lobe motif. The grisailles in the priest's choir and the rose windows in the transept right and left against the front wall: respectively depicting Clara and Elisabeth are from the studio of Cuijpers (Roermond). The remaining windows contain stained-glass windows by Charles Eyck from approximately 1945. Notable here is the carreau decoration in the rose windows resembling that of Chartres and the sense of deformation (triangular necks, elongated faces and figures) which is typical of the artist Eyck. The chapel was polychromed in 1921. Repainted during the renovation in 1964.
Valuation.
The object is of general importance as part of a complex that is valued for its cultural-historical importance as a representative of the transformation of a manor house into an extensive Catholic complex with more than regional significance, it has typological value as a representative of a convent of sisters with a complicated use and building history. It is of architectural-historical importance because of the stratification and sequence of diverse variants of Catholic neo-gothic and because of its place in the work of architect Van Genk. The chapel is of particular importance because of its austere Neo-Gothic forms. It has ensemble value because of its relationship to the village setting. It is rare as a whole.
