Inleiding

Introduction

Huize Adama was built in the 16th century. Jonkheer Hendrick van den Broeck, bailiff of Etten and Sprundel, was probably the first resident of the house in 1580. Then his son Engelbreght, who took over his father's position. Engelbreght was married to Maria Proeninck from Deventer, who owned half of the castle "Herlaer" in Sint Michielsgestel. Their daughter Maria, born in 1605, married the Frisian Jonkheer Reinier Pybes d'Adama. Their family coat of arms hangs above the door. It is an alliance coat of arms consisting of two shields connected to each other by an oak branch in natural colour hanging from it with silver ribbons. On the left the accolade shield of Jonkheer Reinier Pybes d'Adama which consists of four quarters (appendix 2).

This Reinier took over the position of his father-in-law and lost it after the Peace of Münster (1648), namely in 1654. The d'Adama van den Broeck family had eight children. In 1678 the last family member left here for the castle Herlaer. From then on Huize Adama became a kind of status symbol for high-ranking, mostly foreign military officers attached to the K.M.A. in Breda. Around 1800 it was sold to farmer Pieter Boots. It fell into disrepair and was modified in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1820 it is a moated house with a bridge. In 1819 the Franciscan sisters decide, after discussion with pastor Oomen, to buy the house in the name of Adriaan Michiel van Hooydonk, father of the president of the seminary Mgr. van Hooydonk, to establish a boarding school here which was opened on 5 May 1820.

Between 1834 and 1861 the house is extended at the front by means of two parallel wings of two storeys under gabled roofs containing schools, rectory and the boarding school. Between these wings the "front courtyard" is created. Huize Adama is still visible from the street at that time. This view disappears in 1864 with the construction of the gate building. The extensions form the front section (component II). With the construction of the gate building, the institution receives a courtyard. The courtyard was named St. Antoniusplein.

The house is also extended at the rear along the line of the attached front wings. In 1850 the chapel (component III) comes on the south-east side and in 1870 the "lodge" of the sisters with the living and working quarters and dormitories on the south-west side (at the renovation of 1980 this wing is demolished and replaced by new construction).

Description

Huize Adama is a transverse house with two storeys under double gabled roof on a rectangular plan with front facade facing north-east. The roof is covered with grey old Dutch tiles. This facade has a round-arched moulded stone entrance with iron knocker and lock plate (17th century). Stone with alliance coat of arms above the entrance of the first residents of Huize Adama. Arched sash windows on the ground floor fitted with shutters and a twenty-eight pane division with iron glazing bars. On the first floor with twenty-four pane division. Relieving arches above the original windows. Two bollards with curved shafts. The symmetrical front facade of Huize Adama is five bays wide. To the left of the front door the parlour and to the right the sitting room (called bishop's room by the sisters) with a barrel-vaulted cellar below. At the rear of the house an architectural chapel (now chapter room) is built on the first floor in 1870 by architect Soffers with a stuccoed barrel vault. It also receives two storeys at the rear and two parallel gabled roofs. Originally it had only one gabled roof. Since the last renovation the space between the ridges of both gabled roofs has been covered by a flat roof. The external walls are built from hand-formed brick laid in English bond. Huize Adama has internally a spiral staircase with a carved newel adorned with a snake head.

Valuation

The object is of general interest because of its cultural-historical value as a representative of the transformation of a manor house into a large Catholic complex with more than regional significance; it has typological value as a representative of a congregational convent with a complicated building history. It is of architectural-historical importance because of the layering and succession of various variants of Catholic Neo-Gothic. It has ensemble value because of its relationship to the village surroundings. It is as a whole and as a representative of Soffers' work rare.
