Inleiding.

Introduction.

Small chapel in Neo-Gothic style from 1850 and 1882. On the south-east side of Huize Adama the chapel built onto the house, designed by architect P. Soffers (Ginneken). The commission came from the second superior-general Mère M. Louise Steyvers. Rector Timmermans laid the foundation stone. Consecration in 1853 by Mgr. Van Hooydonk. The chapel was funded in 1852 by Zr. Magdalena, who had just entered and transferred her inheritance to the congregation. In 1882 the chapel was enlarged with a transept. The second consecration took place by dean and pastor F.L. Maes. The chapel was polychromed in 1887. When the large chapel was built in 1908 (part IV), the chapel was divided in two vertically. Above it remained a chapel and below a refectory and after the renovation in the eighties of the twentieth century a reception room. The priest's choir of the chapel was demolished in 1908 for the construction of the large chapel. The chapel is situated on the north-east and south-west side wedged between parts II and IV. The nave of the chapel lies with its north-west side at the second courtyard of the convent. The other side of the nave lies at a long narrow third courtyard.

Description.

The very simply detailed chapel, originally with a cruciform ground plan, has a nave of five bays with transept. The external superstructure consists of hand-formed yellow brick (Ijssel format) with heavy profiled buttresses. Pointed arch windows. The original five stained-glass windows from the studios of Stalins and Jansen (Antwerp) were replaced in 1983 by windows from the studio of Swart (Breda). The roof has slate covering. On the crossing a hexagonal crossing tower. The chapel has a polychromed plastered cross-ribbed vault on richly worked leaf capitals and three-part wall shafts. In the lower section of the chapel in the reception room, two oak Neo-Gothic carved doors from 1850, originating from the studio of Peters-Dievoort (Turnhout). In the pointed arch of one door the Heart of Mary with the words: "Spes nostra salve". In the pointed arch of the other door is the Heart of Jesus with the text: "In corde tuo reconde nos".

Valuation.

The object is of general importance as part of a complex that is valued for its cultural-historical importance as a representative of the transformation of a manor house into an extensive Catholic complex with more than regional significance, it has typological value as a representative of a convent of sisters with a complicated use and building history. It is of architectural-historical importance because of the stratification and sequence of diverse variants of Catholic neo-gothic and because of its place in the work of architect P. Soffers. The chapel is of particular importance because of its austere Neo-Gothic forms. It has ensemble value because of its relationship to the village setting. It is rare as a whole.
