Inleiding.
De tweelaagse voorbouw van 't Withof uit 1834-'64 heeft een U-vormige plattegrond rondom het St. Antoniusplein en het al eerder beschreven Huize Adama (onderdeel I). De schilddaken zijn belegd met grijze Romaanse en oud-Hollandse pannen. De voorbouw met daarin de risalerende hoofdingang en topgevel aan de straat, is een ontwerp van architect Soffers uit 1864 en 1885 kwam tot stand onder de vierde algemeen overste Mère Dominique van Dijk. Boven de poort ligt de zogenoemde paarse kapel (vanwege de paarse stoelen). In de oostelijke vleugel bevindt zich het oude rectoraat van het gesticht.
Omschrijving.
De symmetrische voorbouw met hoekpilasters is aan de straatkant tien traveeën breed. De hof (St. Antoniusplein), is vijf bij negen traveeën groot. De ingangspartij is aan de straatzijde risalerend met op de risaliet een gemetselde getrapte topgevel en aan de hofzijde in het dak een gestucte stenen dakkapel met wijzerplaat. De kloosterpoort heeft een geprofileerde hardstenen omlijsting met kielboog en kruisbloem. Boven de hoofdingang een zandstenen beeld van Josef met het Kind Jezus. Waaronder het bijbehorende Latijnse chronicum: "Haec Domus floreat sub protectione Sancti Josephi" ("Moge dit huis floreren onder de bescherming van St. Joseph"). Het beeld is in 1864 geschonken door Ettenaren bij het zilveren professiefeest van de overste Dominique van Dijk. In de topgevel boven het beeld een uurwerk met klok uit 1870 eveneens geschonken door de Ettenaren bij het vijftigjarig bestaan van de congregatie. Het uurwerk heeft ook aan de kant van het St. Antoniusplein een wijzerplaat. Het opgaande werk van de U-vormige voorbouw bestaat in hoofdzaak uit handgevormde baksteen gemetseld in kruisverband.
De eerste zes noord-westelijke raamtraveeën in de zijgevel zijn in machinale steen in kettingverband gemetseld. In de voorgevel ovaalvormige gietijzeren muurankers. In de zijgevels gesmede balkankers. Getoogde schuifvensters, die op de begane grond voorzien zijn van een achtentwintigruits verdeling met ijzeren roeden en op de verdieping van een vierentwintigruits verdeling. Op het dak twee hoekschoorstenen met schoorsteenkap en windvaan. De paarse kapel heeft een gestucadoord tongewelf uit de bouwtijd. Op de oosthoek van de voorbouw een nu driezijdig vrijstaande hoogopgaande vierkante toren met schilddak uit 1885, restant van een gesloopte vleugel uit 1885. Bovenop de toren onder andere een smeedijzeren windvaan met het jaartal. Het metselwerk afgewisseld met natuurstenen speklagen is gemetseld in kruisverband van machinale baksteen.
In de eetzaal van het klooster een gietijzeren wenteltrap en balustrade uit 1870 afkomstig van de firma Klep (later Klep en Bruyn en nog later Etna). De trap stond voor 1983 opgesteld in het slotgedeelte van de zusters. In de linkervleugel van de voorbouw het rectoraat van 1850. Het rectoraat heeft een waranda waarvan het dak wordt gedragen door drie geornamenteerde gietijzeren kolommen. Het interieur bevat onder andere geornamenteerde stucplafonds, beglaasde schuifdeuren, zwartmarmeren schoorsteenmantel en een rijke rood beschilderde betimmering. Het St. Antoniusplein heeft een monumentale ovaalvormige aanleg van geschoren buxushaag waartussen bloemperken met lavendel. De bestrating bestaat uit gele handgevormde klinkers (IJsselformaat). In het midden van het plein staat een natuurstenen St. Antoniusbeeld met Kind op sokkel.
Waardering.
Het object is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische waarde als vertegenwoordiger van de transformatie van een herenhuis tot een omvangrijk katholiek complex met een meer dan regionale uitstraling, het heeft typologische waarde als vertegenwoordiger van een congregatieklooster met een gecompliceerde bewonings- en bouwgeschiedenis. Het is van architectuurhistorisch belang vanwege de gelaagdheid en opeenvolging van diverse varianten van de katholieke neogotiek en vanwege de plaats in het werk van de architect P. Soffers. The cloister gate has a moulded sandstone surround with ogival arch and crocket. Above the main entrance a sandstone image of Joseph with the Christ Child. Below it the corresponding Latin inscription: "Haec Domus floreat sub protectione Sancti Josephi" ("May this house flourish under the protection of St. Joseph"). The image was donated in 1864 by Ettenaren on the occasion of the silver jubilee of the superior Dominique van Dijk. In the stepped gable above the image a timepiece with clock from 1870 likewise donated by the Ettenaren on the fiftieth anniversary of the congregation. The timepiece also has a clock face on the side of the St. Antoniusplein. The masonry of the U-shaped front wing consists mainly of handformed brick laid in cross bond.
The first six north-western window bays in the side elevation are laid in machine-made stone in chain bond. In the front facade oval cast-iron wall anchors. In the side elevels hand-forged balcony anchors. Arched sash windows, which on the ground floor are provided with a twenty-eight-pane division with iron glazing bars and on the upper storey with a twenty-four-pane division. On the roof two corner chimneys with chimney cap and weather vane. The purple chapel has a stuccoed barrel vault from the time of construction. On the east corner of the front wing a now three-sided freestanding high-rising square tower with hipped roof from 1885, remainder of a demolished wing from 1885. On top of the tower among other things a wrought-iron weather vane with the year date. The masonry alternated with natural stone courses is laid in cross bond of machine-made brick.
In the refectory of the cloister a cast-iron spiral staircase and balustrade from 1870 from the firm Klep (later Klep and Bruyn and later Etna). The staircase stood before 1983 installed in the locked section of the sisters. In the left wing of the front wing the rectory from 1850. The rectory has a veranda the roof of which is supported by three ornamented cast-iron columns. The interior contains among other things ornamented stucco ceilings, glazed sash doors, black marble fireplace mantel and rich red-painted wooden panelling. The St. Antoniusplein has a monumental oval layout of clipped box hedge interspersed with flower beds with lavender. The paving consists of yellow handformed clinker bricks (IJssel format). In the centre of the square stands a natural stone image of St. Anthony with Child on a plinth.
Valuation.
The object is of general importance because of its cultural-historical value as a representative of the transformation of a manor house into a large Catholic complex with more than regional significance, it has typological value as a representative of a congregation convent with a complicated residential and construction history. It is of architectural-historical importance because of the stratification and succession of diverse variants of Catholic neo-Gothic and because of its place in the work of architect P. Soffers. It has ensemble value because of its relationship to the village surroundings. It is as a whole and as representative of the work of Soffers rare.
