Inleiding
Voormalig HOOFDKANTOOR, gebouwd in 1929 naar een ontwerp van D. Roosenburg. Het is uitgevoerd in een aan het Functionalisme ontleend idioom. Het pand ligt aan de Emmasingel in het centrum van Eindhoven, tegenover het terrein met industriegebouwen en vervult daardoor de rol van pendant.
Omschrijving
Pand van vijf bouwlagen met kelder onder een plat dak met overstek. Het geheel bestaat uit twee rechthoekige bouwmassa's die geknikt ten opzichte van elkaar staan. Tegen de hoek die deze twee delen met elkaar maken is aan de straatzijde een brede ingangspartij met trap, onder een grote luifel geplaatst. Aan de andere zijde is een zeslaags trappenhuis geplaatst. Dit bouwdeel heeft op de kopse gevel afgeschuinde zijden en aan de voorzijde een breed uitwaaierende éénlaagse glazen uitbouw met luifel waarin de ingangspartij met bordes en trap is aangebracht. De voorste bouwmassa heeft tegen de kopse gevel een erker over de gehele hoogte met een overstek.
De constructie bestaat uit een ijzerskelet, de dragers worden gevormd door Engelse spanten, met beton omstort. De vloeren zijn uitgevoerd in bimsbeton. Aan de buitenzijde is de gevel bekleed met baksteen. In de plint is metselwerk in fantasieverband aangebracht. De gevel bevat enkele natuurstenen ornamenten zoals sculpturen boven de zij-ingang.
De gevels hebben een groot aantal smalle, rechthoekige vensters die een groot deel van het gevelvlak beslaan. Boven de zijingang zijn kleine vierkante raampjes aangebracht.
Het oorspronkelijke interieur had een flexibele opzet. Dit werd in de langgerekte, achterste vleugel gerealiseerd door het plaatsen van verdiepingsvloeren langs de randen, in het midden ontbraken de vloeren. De grote vide met glazen overkappig is nu dichtgezet. Daarnaast werden verplaatsbare wanden tussen de kantoorvertrekken aangebracht. Het interieur is in belangrijke mate gemoderniseerd. In het trappenhuis in de erker tegen de kopse gevel, is de oorspronkelijke inrichting bewaard gebleven. Deze bestaat uit betegelde trappen met granieten treden en een lambrisering uitgevoerd in geglazuurde baksteen.
De glas-in-loodramen in het trappenhuis zijn voorzien van figuratieve voorstellingen.
Waardering
Het voormalige hoofdkantoor, deel uitmakend van de Philipsgebouwen aan de Emmasingel is van algemeen belang. Het gebouw heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de sociaaleconomische ontwikkeling van de nijverheid, in het bijzonder de stichting van de op nationaal niveau van belang zijnde Philipsfabrieken en als visualisatie van de typologische ontwikkeling van de grootschalige hoogbouw voor de industrie. Het heeft innovatieve waarde vanwege de grootschalige en technisch uitgewerkte toepassing van staalconstructies. Building of five storeys with basement beneath a flat roof with overhang. The whole consists of two rectangular building masses that are angled in relation to each other. Against the corner formed by these two parts is a broad entrance section with staircase at the street side, placed beneath a large canopy. On the other side is a six-storey stairwell. This building part has bevelled sides on the gable end and on the front a broad flaring single-storey glazed extension with canopy in which the entrance section with landing and staircase is arranged. The front building mass has against the gable end a bay window over its full height with an overhang.
The structure consists of a steel frame, the supports are formed by English roof trusses, encased in concrete. The floors are executed in pumice concrete. On the outside the facade is clad with brick. In the plinth brickwork in decorative bond is applied. The facade contains several natural stone ornaments such as sculptures above the side entrance.
The facades have a large number of narrow, rectangular windows that cover a large part of the facade surface. Above the side entrance are small square windows.
The original interior had a flexible layout. This was realised in the elongated, rear wing by placing floor slabs along the edges, the floors were absent in the centre. The large void with glazed roofing is now infilled. In addition, movable walls were placed between the office rooms. The interior has been extensively modernised. In the stairwell in the bay against the gable end, the original fittings have been preserved. These consist of tiled stairs with granite treads and wall panelling executed in glazed brick.
