Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
A chain of three STOREY BUILDINGS, constructed in 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930 respectively according to a design by architect D. Roosenburg in a Functionalist style. The oldest building, EE, lies set back from the street parallel to the Emmasingel. EF stands perpendicular to the Emmasingel, EF connects at its short end to the end of the long side of EE. Against the side facade of EG the elongated building EH is placed, parallel to the Emmasingel.
In the corner between EE and EF a portion of the site is undeveloped so that an open space is created towards the outside of the site (corner Willemstraat/Emmasingel).
The whole of the wings placed perpendicular to each other occupies a large part of the street front at the Emmasingel. A major renovation and change of use by architect B. Dirrix was completed in 1998.
Description
The individual wings are each six storeys high under a flat roof with overhanging edge. The corners of the whole are built higher. The gable wall of building EE has a curved bay window over the entire height of the building, with a glazed structure that protrudes above the roof edge. The building is executed in concrete, formwork marks are visible across the entire facade. The building has large windows, fitted with now renewed metal frames with horizontal glazing bars.
The original layout has been completely altered, the double staircases for the separation of male and female staff have been retained as well as the heavy concrete structure with floor surfaces supported by four columns and heavy beams. In a section of five bays at the Emmasingel this structure has been replaced by new internal structures.
Valuation
The building 'De Witte Dame', forming part of the Philips buildings at the Emmasingel, is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as an example of the socio-economic development of industry, in particular the establishment of the Philips factories which are of national importance, and as a visualisation of the typological development of large-scale high-rise construction for industry. It has innovative value because of the large-scale and technically elaborate application of reinforced concrete structures. It is of architectural-historical importance because of the extremely sober but impressive design of part of the buildings and as an example of the applied combination of building elements; it is of importance in the oeuvre of architect Roosenburg. It has ensemble values as part of a larger whole and is known as a hallmark of the 'light city' Eindhoven. It is also of importance because of the integrity of the layout which is still recognisable. It is rare because of its layout and construction.
