Inleiding
FABRIEKSGEBOUW ED is het meest markante deel van dit object en staat algemeen bekend als de "lichttoren". Het pand ligt op de hoek van de Emmasingel met de Mathildelaan, aan de rand van het complex. Het is een groot L-vormig gebouw waarvan de hoekbebouwing driezijdig afgeschuind is. Dit blok ligt iets schuin ten opzichte van de langgerekte vleugel aan de Mathildelaan. Het gebouw is in 1921 gebouwd naar ontwerp van architekt L. Scheffer in Functionalistische stijl. Aansluitend aan de vleugel aan de Mathildelaan bevindt zich het Philipsgebouw EC. Dit voormalige hoofdgebouw is nu in gebruik als kantoor. Dit pand is in 1911 gebouwd.
Omschrijving
Het gehele pand is zes lagen hoog en heeft een plat dak. Het oudste gedeelte (EC) heeft een L-vormige plattegrond, onder een plat dak. Op de hoek is een kleine torenachtige opbouw met tentdak geplaatst. Dit dak staat op een overstek, ondersteund door grote klossen.
Het gedeelte ED heeft een langwerpige plattegrond, naar de hoek met de Emmasingel toe uitwaaierend. Deze hoekpartij heeft drie schuingeplaatste zijden en is voorzien van een torenachtige opbouw, vijf lagen hoog, met eveneens schuin geplaatste zijden. Aan de uiteinden van de gevel en op de hoeken zijn uitstekende liftschachten geplaatst. Deze liftschachten steken iets boven de dakrand uit. De constructie van het gehele pand bestaat uit een gewapend betonskelet, ook de gevels zijn uitgevoerd in beton en witgeverfd.
Pand EC heeft grote vierkante ramen, voorzien van ijzeren kozijnen met een kleine roedenverdeling. De gevelwand van ED is geheel gevuld met brede ramen welke eveneens van ijzeren kozijnen met een kleine roedenverdeling zijn voorzien. De ramen op de bovenste verdieping zijn, evenals de ramen in de torenachtige opbouw, kleiner.
Aan de bovenste randen van het gebouw EC en de liftschachten zijn decoraties aangebracht door een reliëfwerking in het beton. Op de top van de liftschachten zijn dat horizontale banden. Ook op de gevel, direct onder de dakrand zijn de banden aangebracht, ter plekke van de liftschachten gaan deze over in bol uitstekende elementen.
Waardering
De lichttoren met annexen van de Philipsgebouwen aan de Emmasingel is van algemeen belang. Het gebouw heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de sociaaleconomische ontwikkeling van de nijverheid, in het bijzonder de stichting van de op nationaal niveau van belang zijnde Philipsfabrieken en als visualisatie van de typologische ontwikkeling van de grootschalige hoogbouw voor de industrie. Het heeft innovatieve waarde vanwege de grootschalige en technisch uitgewerkte toepassing van gewapend betonconstructies. FACTORY BUILDING ED is the most striking part of this object and is commonly known as the "light tower".
