Inleiding
Nabij de wagenloods bevindt zich ten noorden van het klooster een POMPSTATION uit 1936-197, het eerste ontwerp van Hans van der Laan in de stijl van de Delftse School. Het werd opgemetseld door de broeders Henri Boelaars, Lambertus Nooyen en Benedictus Nuyten. Tot 1937 pompte men met behulp van een kleine motorpomp ijzerhoudend water uit een zestig meter diepe put onder de kapittelzaal gehaald. Nabij het pompstation werd in 1936 een nieuwe put geslagen. De oorspronkelijke pompinstallatie, met automatische ontijzering en ontzuring van het bronwater, werd geleverd door de firma Willekens uit Tilburg (thans vervangen).
Omschrijving
Het bakstenen pompstation beslaat een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt één bouwlaag en een kapverdeling onder een met rode, verbeterde Hollandse pannen gedekt zadeldak met licht geknikte en overstekende dakvoet. Dakraam en ranke schoorsteen op het linker dakschild. Het zadeldak zit opgesloten tussen twee, de voor- en achtergevel bekronende trapgevels met op de treden bakstenen ezelsruggen. Symmetrische voorgevel met centrale klampdeur voorzien van originele ijzeren deurkruk en bovengelegen opgeklampt zolderluik onder strekken. Oostgevel met een houten vierruitsvenster onder strek en met bakstenen afzaat. Westgevel met een opgeklampte, dubbele deur onder een korfboog met aan weerszijden twee smalle, diep gelegen vensters onder strekken en met bakstenen afzaten. Zuidgevel blind. De oorspronkelijke indeling is bewaard gebleven. De westelijke poort geeft toegang tot de aan de zuidzijde gesitueerde machinekamer die circa 2/3 van de plattegrond beslaat. Via de noordelijke ingang is een ondiepe, maar de gehele breedte bestrijkende dienstruimte toegankelijk.
Waardering
Het pompstation is van algemeen belang. Het object bezit cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van geestelijke en technische ontwikkelingen, namelijk de vestiging van nieuwe, grotendeels zelfvoorzienende kloostergemeenschappen in het begin van de twintigste eeuw - in dit geval als uitvloeisel van de Franse Wet op de Verenigingen- en verder de verbeterde drinkwatervoorziening onder invloed van technologische innovaties. Daarnaast vanwege het belang van de typologie voor de ontwikkeling van pompstations. Het object heeft architectuurhistorische waarden vanwege de esthetische kwaliteiten van het architectonische ontwerp. Het object bezit tesamen met de overige tot de Sint Paulus-abdij behorende objecten en de binnen de 'Heilige Driehoek' gelegen kloosters ensemblewaarden als essentieel onderdeel van een historisch gegroeid religieus ensemble ten zuidoosten van de kern van Oosterhout. Introduction
Near the wagon shed, north of the monastery, is a PUMP STATION from 1936-1937, the first design by Hans van der Laan in the style of the Delft School. Description
The brick pump station has a rectangular floor plan and comprises one storey and roof space beneath a gabled roof covered with red, improved Dutch tiles with slightly bent and overhanging eaves. Roof light and slender chimney on the left roof slope. The gabled roof is enclosed between two stepped gables crowning the front and rear facades, with brick saddle-backed decorative tiles on the steps. Symmetrical front facade with central clamped door provided with original iron door handle and above-located clamped loft hatch under lintel. East facade with a wooden four-pane window under lintel and with brick sill. West facade with a clamped double door beneath a segmental arch with two narrow, deeply recessed windows under lintels on either side and with brick sills. South facade blank. The original interior layout has been preserved. The western door gives access to the machine room situated on the south side, which occupies approximately two-thirds of the floor plan. Via the northern entrance, a shallow service room spanning the full width is accessible.
