Omschrijving
Hoogstraat 80, Oosterhout (onderdeel 4)
Inleiding.
Zuidgevel blind.

Description
Hoogstraat 80, Oosterhout (component 4)
Introduction.
On the south side of the site, near the Monnikendreef, a GARAGE (ground floor) with FRUIT STORAGE ROOM (upper storey) dating from 1935, built in a Craftsman-traditional building style to a design by friars Guus Caron and Adriaan Vermeulen in collaboration with architect Alexander Kropholler. Kropholler advised bending the roof boards, adding buttresses and using heavy iron hinges. The roof was re-covered in the 1990s with modern concrete tiles. As the friars increasingly devoted attention to fruit cultivation, the need for storage space grew. In the early 1930s, many berry and raspberry bushes were planted on the monastery grounds, later followed by apple, pear and plum trees. In the garage below, a motor vehicle and a motor pump were stored.
Description.
The brick structure has a rectangular floor plan and comprises one storey with a roof space under a gabled roof with bent roof boards. Substantial roof overhang with wind braces and visible roof structure. Angled buttresses tapering towards the top with ashlar coping stones at the intersections. The masonry of the structure, laid in half-brick bond, is enlivened by alternating predominantly yellow bricks with some red ones. Ashlar is further used for corner stones, moulded units, drip moulds and lintels.
Symmetrical front facade with a heavy, clamped double garage door on the ground floor in the centre, furnished with ornate wrought-iron ironwork under a coved arch laid with headers. Clamped boarded door on the upper storey under a round arch laid with headers, opening onto a balcony with iron balustrade, handrail and braces.
In the likewise symmetrical rear facade, a garage door on the ground floor with detailing as mentioned above. Identical side facades with four twelve-paned hop windows under ashlar lintels on the ground floor and with corresponding drip moulds. Under the roof edge three wooden ventilation hatches under rolled mouldings.
In connection with the storage of fruit on the upper storey, a brick ceiling laid in half-brick bond has been employed.
Valuation.
The garage with fruit storage room is of general importance. The structure has cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of spiritual, socio-economic and agricultural developments, namely the establishment of new, largely self-sufficient monastic communities in the early twentieth century - in this case as a consequence of the French Law on Associations - furthermore the crises of the 1930s, the increasing use of automobiles and improved production techniques in agriculture.
The structure has architectural-historical value due to the aesthetic quality of the architectural design with some remarkable building details added on the advice of architect A. Kropholler. The structure, together with the other structures belonging to Sint Paulus Abbey and the monasteries located within the 'Holy Triangle', possesses ensemble value as an essential component of a historically developed religious ensemble to the southeast of the centre of Oosterhout. Furthermore, due to the functional historical-spatial relationship with part of the surrounding, originally agriculturally used monastery lands and the infrastructural access to the site.
The structure is of importance due to its recognisably preserved main form and is rare with regard to its combined use and external appearance.
Hoogstraat 80, Oosterhout (component 5)
Introduction.
Near the wagon shed, a PUMP STATION dating from 1936-1937 is located to the north of the monastery, the first design by Hans van der Laan in the style of the Delft School. It was built by the friars Henri Boelaars, Lambertus Nooyen and Benedictus Nuyten. Until 1937, iron-bearing water was pumped from a sixty-metre-deep well near the kitchen using a small motor pump. Drinking water was drawn with a hand pump from a well under the chapter hall. Near the pump station, a new well was sunk in 1936. The original pump installation, with automatic de-ironing and de-acidification of the spring water, was supplied by the firm Willekens from Tilburg (now replaced).
Description.
The brick pump station has a rectangular floor plan and comprises one storey and a roof space under a gabled roof covered with red, improved Dutch tiles with slightly bent and overhanging roof edge. Roof window and slender chimney on the left roof board. The gabled roof is enclosed between two stepped gables surmounting the front and rear facades, with brick saddle backs on the steps.
Symmetrical front facade with a central clamped door provided with original iron door handle and an upper clamped attic hatch under stretchers. East facade with a wooden four-pane window under a stretcher and with brick offset course. West facade with a clamped double door under a coved arch with two narrow, deeply recessed windows under stretchers and with brick offset courses on either side. South facade blind.
The original layout has been preserved. The western door provides access to the machine room situated on the south side, which occupies approximately 2/3 of the floor plan. Via the northern entrance, a shallow but full-width service room is accessible.
Valuation.
The pump station is of general importance. The structure has cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of spiritual and technical developments, namely the establishment of new, largely self-sufficient monastic communities in the early twentieth century - in this case as a consequence of the French Law on Associations - and furthermore improved drinking water supply under the influence of technological innovations. Furthermore, due to the importance of the typology for the development of pump stations. The structure has architectural-historical value due to the aesthetic qualities of the architectural design.
The structure, together with the other structures belonging to Sint Paulus Abbey and the monasteries located within the 'Holy Triangle', possesses ensemble value as an essential component of a historically developed religious ensemble to the southeast of the centre of Oosterhout. Furthermore, due to the functional historical-spatial relationship with the water well sunk in the vicinity. The structure is of importance due to the integrity of its exterior.
