Inleiding.
Op de Isralitische begraafplaats "Sombre Hadass" staat, nabij de ingang, direct ten zuiden van de oost-west getraceerde hoofdstraat, het Expressionistische GRAFMONUMENT van Max Halevy, daterende uit 1933. Het grafmonument is, blijkens een inscriptie in de onderplaat, uitgevoerd door het Antwerpse atelier Cl. Jonckheere.
Omschrijving.
Het object bestaat uit een hardstenen onderplaat, waarop, op een marmeren dekplaat, de granieten zerk is gesitueerd. Achter dit graf is een opstaande granieten plaat, waarop in bronsbeslag verschillende ornamenten en de tekst: "Max Halevy / Prsident de la communaut / Israelite d'Anvers / 26 Septembre 1881 / 17 Mars 1933 / Julia Halevy ne Lowy / 1885-1947". Het geheel is aan de noordelijke en zuidelijke zijde afgesloten met een granieten borstwering op marmeren kolommen en wordt geflankeerd door marmeren schalen op dito kolommen.
Waardering.
Het grafmonument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en geestelijke ontwikkeling, namelijk de ontwikkeling van de joodse grafcultuur, het is tevens van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van het grafmonument.
Het heeft architectuurhistorisch belang door de verzorgde detaillering. Het heeft ensemblewaarden als onderdeel van een begraafplaats, die cultuurhistorisch en architectuurhistorisch van belang is als manifestatie van de geschiedenis van de joodse grafcultuur over onze landsgrenzen. The grave monument was, as shown by an inscription in the base plate, executed by the Antwerp studio Cl. Jonckheere.
Description.
The object consists of a limestone base plate, on which, on a marble top plate, the granite tombstone is situated. Behind this grave is an upright granite plate, on which in bronze fittings various ornaments and the text: "Max Halevy / Prsident de la communaut / Israelite d'Anvers / 26 Septembre 1881 / 17 Mars 1933 / Julia Halevy ne Lowy / 1885-1947". The whole is closed off on the northern and southern side with a granite breastwork on marble columns and is flanked by marble bowls on similar columns.
Valuation.
The grave monument is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of a social and spiritual development, namely the development of Jewish burial culture, it is also of importance for the typological development of the grave monument.
