Inleiding

Introduction

The MINISTER'S HOUSE with attached BARN at Helenaveen is situated next to the N.H. and Reformed church and dates from 1867. The building is architecturally related to the former director's house of the Maatschappij Helenaveen, to which it is also related in urban planning terms. Around 1925 a small oriel window was placed against the east gable.

Description

The single-storey, under-cellared building has a roughly square ground plan, is covered by a gabled roof with old Dutch tiles and is provided on the north side next to the kitchen with a simple single-storey barn. The minister's house is built in hand-moulded brick and provided with a plastered plinth. The south street facade has a symmetrical layout with a one-brick-thick central risalite, containing a panelled front door with fanlight, bell pull and brick step, above which a simple six-light sash window. All windows in the south facade have a pronounced profiled surround with rounded shoulders. The risalite is flanked on both sides by a window with two paired six-light sash frames, separated from each other by a carved wooden column.

The east facade has a three-light half window. Against the facade around 1925 a three-sided wooden oriel window with ladder windows and flat roof was placed. The interior has largely retained the original layout. Important features include the central passage, the room en suite with old panelled doors, and the tiled fireplace with profiled fireplace beam and cylindrical stove in the kitchen. Important is the planting in the garden, including in particular a red beech and a false acacia (each approximately 3 metres in girth). In the garden stands an S-casemate, which is protected as part of the Peel-Raam fortification system at Deurne.

Valuation

The minister's house is of general interest. The building has cultural-historical importance as a special expression of the development of protestantism in an exceptional position in the Catholic south and is also important as an example of the typological development of the manse. The building has architectural-historical importance through the austere Waterstaat style and the detailing which conveys simplicity but also restrained representativeness. It has ensemble values because of its special location, connected with the development of the land reclamation settlement. It has been preserved intact and is important because of its architectural-historical, typological and functional rarity.
