Inleiding
De N.H. EN GEREFORMEERDE KERK te Helenaveen is een eenvoudig zaalvormig kerkgebouw dat in de architectuur elementen van Waterstaatsstijl vertoont. Het gebouw dateert uit 1867 en heeft de jaren nagenoeg ongewijzigd getrotseerd. In 1883 werd in de voorgevel een forse memoriesteen ingemetseld, bij gelegenheid van het overlijden van de predikant Swalue.
Omschrijving
De kerk heeft een globaal rechthoekige plattegrond en bestaat uit een zuidelijke gevel met ingang en geveltoren en een schip van vijf traveeën met driezijdige sluiting op het noorden. Het handvorm bakstenen gebouw onder zadeldak met kruispannen heeft een gecementeerde, van schijnvoegen voorziene zijgevel. Tegen alle gevels zijn lisenen gemetseld. De zuidelijke gevel heeft een eensteens middenrisaliet met opgeklampte vleugeldeur, waarboven een geprofileerd omlijst gietijzeren rondboogvenster met eenvoudige lancet- en oculusindeling. De gepleisterde afdeklijst met gestuct rondboogfries, bij de middenrisaliet met gestuct pediment waarin een klein venster, wordt bekroond door een geveltoren, gedekt met leien in Maasdekking en heeft een kleine spits op vierkante grondslag, voorzien van luidklok en uurwerk.
In het interieur zijn onder meer van belang de gestucte kruisribgewelven, voorzien van trekankers, de kansel aan de noordzijde, en het houten zangkoor in de eerste travee. Links naast de vleugeldeur in de zuidelijke gevel bevindt zich een ovale hardstenen gedenkplaat met de ingebeitelde tekst: "E.B. Swalue / geb. 11 Febr. 1839 / gest. 5 Juni 1883 / Romein 1:16".
Waardering
De kerk is van algemeen belang. Het gebouw heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van de ontwikkeling van het protestantisme in een uitzonderingspositie in het katholieke zuiden en is tevens van belang als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van de preekkerk. The N.H. AND REFORMED CHURCH at Helenaveen is a simple hall-type church building that exhibits elements of Waterstaatsstijl in its architecture. The building dates from 1867 and has weathered the years virtually unchanged. In 1883, a substantial memorial stone was set into the front facade on the occasion of the death of the pastor Swalue.
Description
The church has a roughly rectangular plan and consists of a southern facade with entrance and facade tower and a nave of five bays with three-sided closure to the north. The handmoulded brick building under a gabled roof with cross tiles has a cemented side facade featuring faux joints. Pilasters are laid against all facades. The southern facade has a single-brick central risalit with an attached wing door, above which is a profiled cast-iron round-arch window with simple lancet and oculus division. The plastered cornice with stuccoed round-arch frieze, at the central risalit with stuccoed pediment containing a small window, is crowned by a facade tower, covered with slate in Maas-pattern covering and featuring a small spire on a square base, provided with a bell and clockwork.
In the interior, items of particular importance include the stuccoed cross-rib vaults, fitted with tie anchors, the pulpit on the north side, and the wooden singing loft in the first bay. To the left of the wing door in the southern facade is an oval sandstone memorial plaque with the carved text: "E.B. Swalue / born 11 Feb. 1839 / died 5 June 1883 / Romans 1:16".
Valuation
The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of the development of Protestantism in an exceptional position in the Catholic south and is also of value as an example of the typological development of the preaching church. The building has architectural-historical value through the austere Waterstaatsstijl and the Romanising detailing that convey simplicity but also a restrained representativeness. It has ensemble values because of its particular siting, connected with the development of the settlement on reclaimed land.
