Inleiding
Aan de oostelijke zijde van de N.H. en Gereformeerde kerk te Helenaveen staat de bijbehorende ZONDAGSSCHOOL, daterende uit omstreeks 1880. Het pand is verschillende keren verbouwd. Zo is waarschijnlijk omstreeks 1900 de voordeur verplaatst, en is toen tevens een klein toiletgebouw aan de oostelijke zijde toegevoegd.
Omschrijving
Het eenlaags schoolgebouw heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond en wordt gedekt door een zadeldak met lei in Maasdekking. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in baksteen en voorzien van een dubbele tandlijst. De zijgevels worden bekroond door nokruiters. De westelijke gevel was oorspronkelijk symmetrisch van opzet: een opgeklampte deur met bovenlicht werd aan elke zijde geflankeerd door een zesruits schuifvenster. Waarschijnlijk omstreeks 1900 heeft men de deur en het noordelijke schuifvenster verwisseld. De oorspronkelijke elementen zijn hergebruikt. In dezelfde tijd is tegen de blinde westelijke zijde een lage toiletaanbouw onder plat dak geplaatst. Op een klein venster na is het bakstenen muurwerk geheel blind. De indeling van het interieur is waarschijnlijk gewijzigd na de verplaatsing van de deur. Het oorspronkelijke plafond is niet zichtbaar.
Waardering
De zondagsschool is van algemeen belang. Het gebouw heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van de ontwikkeling van het protestantisme in een uitzonderingspositie in het katholieke zuiden en is tevens van belang als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van het kerkelijk erf. The single-storey school building has a rectangular plan and is covered by a gabled roof with slate in Dutch bond. The facades are built up in brick and provided with a double dentil course. The side facades are crowned by roof ridges. The western facade was originally symmetrical in layout: a clamped door with fanlight was flanked on each side by a six-paned sash window. Probably around 1900 the door and the northern sash window were exchanged. The original elements were reused. At the same time a low toilet extension under a flat roof was placed against the blind western side. Apart from a small window, the brickwork wall is entirely blind. The interior layout was probably changed after the relocation of the door. The original ceiling is not visible.
