Inleiding

SCHAKELHUIS-POMPSTATION, gebouwd in 1923 in overgangsstijl.

Introduction

SWITCH HOUSE-PUMP STATION, built in 1923 in transitional style. The electrically driven switch house-pump station served to bring the water level of the canal sections lying upstream relative to the lock up to the established height. Similar pump stations are also located at locks I, II and IV.

Description.

The two-storey pump house has a rectangular plan and is constructed of machine-made brick. The roof consists of a steep gabled roof against which a gently sloping lean-to roof has been applied, both covered with red newly improved Dutch roof tiles. The gable ends are covered by the tiles. The facades are articulated by lisenes with rounded sandstone cresting. A sandstone band course separates the ground floor and the first floor. The few windows on the ground floor are bricked up. In the low gable under the lean-to roof is a panelled door beneath a steel lintel with rosettes. In this gable there is a brick chimney with decorative brickwork at the bottom. On the first floor there are on the corners each one and further three grouped together high narrow two-part windows. All windows are provided with a sandstone sill and a lintel with moulded edge. In the other high side gable, at the level of the first floor, there are two rows of three high narrow three-part windows. The lower articulation of these windows is finished with simple decorative ironwork.

On the left side is a brick chimney placed with decorative brickwork at the bottom. In the gable sections, one facing the bridge and the other facing Haghorst, there are various windows. In the low section these are two two-part narrow windows. Next to it, between the lisenes, a row of five windows. The middle three are carried down as three-part windows lower. In the gable a triple window is placed.

In the pump house is the machinery belonging to the lock.

Assessment.

The switch house and pump station is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical values as an expression of a socio-economic development through the creation of an east-west connection by means of the construction of a canal in the south of the Netherlands.

It is also of importance as a particular example of a technical development, including the early application of electric motors. It has architectural-historical values through the sober vocabulary of forms, related in part to the transitional style. It has ensemble values as part of a larger whole, namely the infrastructure associated with the Wilhelmina Canal. The whole has been preserved intact, this applies in particular to the still present original layout and the structural and visual integrity of the entire complex.
