Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
LOCK number IV, constructed in 1923, executed as a bayonet lock.
Although the development of electric motors was still in its early stages, all locks were nevertheless equipped with such motors.
The lock gates were renewed in 1965-1966.
Description.
The lock consists of a bayonet lock with upper and lower lock heads. The whole is utilitarian in execution, without decoration. The lock heads are of machine-made brick with rounded granite corner blocks and coping stones. There are moreover cast steel angle irons present for reinforcement. Each lock head has two sets of renewed wooden pointed gates, on which a footbridge with railing. The gates are fitted with cast steel neck brackets which by means of rods are connected to panama wheels driven by electric motors. These panama wheels are located in the pavements alongside the lock chambers. The casings in which the wheels are located are closed off by steel shutters.
At the upper side the lock walls are provided with concrete coping stones with cast steel angle posts. Along the lock chambers lie tiled pavements, in which a large number of fixed bollards have been placed.
The filling and emptying of the lock chambers takes place via bypass channels which are built into the masoned lock walls: these can be shut off by means of electrically operated cylinder sluices. At the above-described rotating bollards there are also circular steel cover plates for the sheet steel tubes in which the electrically operated cylinder sluices are placed by means of which the bypass channels are operated. Before the entrance of the lock are mooring works and mooring posts placed from circa 1923, where ships could moor while waiting.
Valuation.
The lock is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical values as an expression of a socio-economic development by creating an east-west connection by means of the construction of a canal in the south of the Netherlands. It is also of importance as a particular example of technical development, including the early application of electric motors. It has ensemble values as part of a larger whole, namely the infrastructure associated with the Wilhelmina Canal. The lock has been preserved intact, in conjunction with the still present original construction and the structural and visual integrity of the entire complex.
