Inleiding.
GRAFMONUMENT voor de kruideniersfamilie De Gruyter, opgericht in 1911 in Um 1800 vormen. In de onderliggende grafkelder zijn verschillende leden van de familie bijgezet onder wie L.A. de Gruyter (1833-1911) en zijn vrouw M.E. de Gruyter-Lombarts (1837-1887). Het monument is gelegen aan de zuidoostelijke zijde van de bisschopskapel in de zuidwestelijke punt van sectie 21-11-06-19. In vormgeving behoort het monument tot de voornaamste op de begraafplaats.
Omschrijving.
Het grafmonument heeft een vierkante, meerdelige plint, waarop een samengestelde hardstenen voetplaat rust die licht afloopt. Centraal hierop is het feitelijke monument geplaatst. Dit heeft een rechthoekige grondslag en bovenop een zich verjongend basement een reeks van vier centrale, gecanneleerde hoekpijlers met daartussen aan de zijkanten telkens twee gecanneleerde Ionische pijlers. De ruimte tussen elk pilasterpaar wordt opgevuld door een bewerkte marmeren steen waarin de namen van de overledenen zijn uitgehakt. Hierboven bevindt zich het entablement dat in het midden iets uitspringt. De bovenste zone wordt gevormd door een imitatiedak met gebogen schilden waarop leien gesuggereerd worden. Het centrale gedeelte bestaat uit een sober geornamenteerde, vierkante uitbouw met frontonbekroning aan alle vier de zijden. Bovenop deze uitbouw is een witmarmeren kruis met omgeslagen doek geplaatst.
Waardering.
Het grafmonument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en geestelijke ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de ontwikkeling van de katholieke grafcultuur, het is tevens van belang als illustratie van de typologische ontwikkeling van het grafmonument. Het grafmonument heeft kunsthistorisch belang vanwege de hoge kwaliteit van de toegepaste Um 1800 vormgeving. Het graf heeft ensemblewaarden als onderdeel van een groter geheel met cultuurhistorische, architectuurhistorische en typologische samenhang. Het is gaaf bewaard gebleven en typologisch zeldzaam.

GRAVE MONUMENT for the grocer family De Gruyter, erected in 1911 in forms circa 1800. In the underlying grave vault various members of the family are buried including L.A. de Gruyter (1833-1911) and his wife M.E. de Gruyter-Lombarts (1837-1887). The monument is located on the southeastern side of the bishop's chapel in the southwestern corner of section 21-11-06-19. In its design the monument ranks among the most important on the cemetery.
Description.
The grave monument has a square, multi-part plinth, upon which rests a composite hardstone base plate that slopes slightly. Centrally placed upon this is the actual monument. This has a rectangular ground plan and above a tapering basement a series of four central, fluted corner pilasters with two fluted Ionic pilasters respectively at the sides between each pilaster pair. The space between each pair of pilasters is filled by a worked marble stone in which the names of the deceased are carved. Above this is the entablature which projects slightly in the middle. The upper zone is formed by an imitation roof with curved shields upon which slates are suggested. The central section consists of a soberly ornamented, square projection with pediment crowning on all four sides. Upon this projection is placed a white marble cross with draped cloth.
Valuation.
The grave monument is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social and spiritual development, in particular the development of Catholic grave culture, and is also of importance as an illustration of the typological development of the grave monument. The grave monument has art-historical importance due to the high quality of the applied design circa 1800. The grave has ensemble values as part of a larger whole with cultural-historical, architectural-historical and typological coherence. It has remained intact and is typologically rare.
