Omschrijving
Inleiding.
GRAFMONUMENT voor de zanger Willem Deckers (1826-1899), in 1899 opgericht in Eclectische vormen door de Bossche architect/beeldhouwers H.C. Dobbe en Van Pelt. Het grafmonument bevindt zich aan de oostelijke zijde van de bisschopskapel, sectie 24-14-01-06.
Omschrijving.
Het graf bestaat uit een rechthoekige grafplaat, omgeven door lage, gecanneleerde hoekpijlers die onderling met kettingen verbonden zijn. De grafplaat heeft als enige inscriptie de naam van de begravene. Aan de achterzijde hiervan bevindt zich de hoog opgaande hardstenen stèle die door een kruis bekroond wordt. Boven het basement bevindt zich een fronton met epitaaf en met gestileerde florale ornamentiek. In het met een rondboog getoogde gedeelte daarboven is een engel met bazuin en palmtak gegroefd. Bovenin staat: Willem Deckers. Verder is deels over de engel aangebracht de inscriptie: in memoriam Ridder van Oranje Nassau, lid der St. Vincentiusvereniging. De epitaaf in het fronton luidt: "Hij rust en zwijgt in 't stille graf die zong in blijde en droeve dagen, bij feestgedruisch, bij 't rouwedragen en die aan god steeds eere gaf. Al boeit de dood zijn machtige stem, ten jongsten dag zal hij verrijzen en god in eeuwige liedren prijzen in 't hemelsche jerusalem".
Het graf is rechtsonder op de stèle gesigneerd.
Waardering.
Het grafmonument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en geestelijke ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de ontwikkeling van de katholieke grafcultuur, het is tevens van belang als illustratie van de typologische ontwikkeling van het grafmonument. Het graf is van belang vanwege de plaats die de sculptuur inneemt binnen het oeuvre van de Bossche architect/beeldhouwers H.C. Dobbe en Van Pelt. Het graf heeft kunsthistorisch belang vanwege de toegepaste eclectische vormgeving. GRAVE MONUMENT for the singer Willem Deckers (1826-1899), erected in 1899 in Eclectic forms by the Den Bosch architect/sculptors H.C. Dobbe and Van Pelt. The grave monument is situated on the eastern side of the bishop's chapel, section 24-14-01-06.
Description.
The grave consists of a rectangular grave slab surrounded by low, fluted corner pillars which are interconnected by chains. The grave slab has as its only inscription the name of the deceased. On the rear of this is the high-rising stone stele, which is crowned by a cross. Above the base is a pediment with epitaph and with stylised floral ornamentation. In the section above with a rounded arch is an angel with trumpet and palm frond carved. At the top is inscribed: Willem Deckers. Further, partly across the angel, is the inscription: in memoriam Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau, member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The epitaph in the pediment reads: "He rests in silence in the quiet grave, he who sang in joyful and sorrowful days, at festive commotion, at times of mourning, and who always gave honour to god. Though death binds his powerful voice, on the last day he shall rise and praise god in eternal songs in heavenly Jerusalem".
The grave is signed in the lower right on the stele.
