Inleiding

Introduction

COUNTRY HOUSE from 1913, forming part of the country estate complex "Berghuis". The country house was designed by architect C.J. Kruisweg in Neo-Historical style with English Country House style influence.

Description

The COUNTRY HOUSE is arranged almost symmetrically on a rectangular ground plan with two corner projections at the front and at the rear a semi-circular extension housing a conservatory. The house is constructed largely over two storeys in red brick, the corners are accentuated by tooled blockwork brickwork. All around a slightly projecting plinth with drip moulding and at the height of the floor level decorative wrought iron wall anchors. The roof tiles of the high hipped roof and of the pitched roofs above the projections have a flared roof edge and lead cladding. In the middle of the ridge of the roof stands an octagonal roof turret with two weather vanes on the brick base and a wooden lantern beneath an truncated octagonal slate roof with decorative wrought iron crown. On the ridge ends two brick chimneys, as well as on the ridge ends above the corner projections at the front. On the left side elevation (NE) there is a single-storey extension with service entrance beneath a hipped roof with flared roof edge and lead cladding.

The windows are predominantly executed with cross windows and, like the double glass doors, provided with six-pane fanlights, some with leaded glass, and blinds. In the middle of the almost symmetrical front facade (NW) the entrance section consisting of a double glass door with side and fanlights with small glazing bars in a surround of pilasters and cornice. On either side of the step before the entrance section two low brick walls with natural stone ornamental balls. Above the entrance a three-part window and two single windows with leaded glass panes which illuminate the rear staircase. On either side of the door section and the first-floor windows small oculi with sandstone surrounds with garlands. Centrally in the roof a roof dormer with a bent round-arch pediment and four small six-pane windows. The corner projections contain cross windows and in the roof small arched roof dormers. In the junction of the left corner projection an obliquely placed entrance section with door beneath an overhang. In the elevation of the low extension, to the left of the main volume, a double eight-pane window with shutters. The rear elevation (SE) has five window axes with in the middle a semi-circular extension housing a conservatory beneath a balcony on four wooden columns. In the conservatory five large lightly curved sash windows with small glazing bars in the fanlights. On the first floor a double glass door with side and fanlights opens onto the balcony with iron balcony railing. The window axes on either side of the central axis contain on the ground floor double glass doors, which open onto the terrace and on the first floor cross windows. Centrally in the roof a dormer with a bent round-arch pediment and four small six-pane windows. On either side two smaller dormers with double six-pane windows and bent segmental arch termination.

The gable south-west elevation contains on the left cross windows between narrow sash windows and on the right two cross windows. On the gable north-east elevation on the right the single-storey extension with loggia, which consists of a brick parapet and small wooden columns which support the roof overhang. The service entrance comprises a door with fanlights and side lights. To the left of the extension in the elevation a cross window and a narrow sash window with fanlight and on the first floor two cross windows. The interior of the country house on the ground floor and in the staircase is largely in the original state from the time of construction. On the ground floor the entrance vestibule with draught lobby which is identically arranged as the entrance section in the front facade. Following English tradition centrally on the ground floor a large "hall" with monumental fireplace and a semi-circular extension housing a conservatory. The panelled doors, beam ceilings, wall panelling, built-in cupboards and fireplaces are executed in dark oak. The transition from the entrance with black-and-white tiled floor to the parquet floor of the hall is marked by two columns executed in dark oak. On the ground floor in the front room a so-called fireplace nook with fireplace and seating benches beneath a lowered ceiling and a fixed cupboard wall, partly with display case. Corner window towards the "hall."

Valuation

The country house from 1913 forming part of the complex "Berghuis" is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value as an intact and representative example of an early 20th-century country house in Neo-Historical style with particularly intact and richly detailed interior and as part of the country estate Berghuis, situated in the country estates strip on the northern slope of Gooi.
