COACHHOUSE/GARAGE with SERVICE DWELLING (2), belonging to the country house 'Coromote', which was built in 1924 according to a design by The Hague architect S. de Clerq in a New Historicist style, inspired by Dutch Classicism with influence from the English country house style. The clients were the dowager of Jonkheer Mr. A.L.J. Melvill van Carnbee, born Jonkvrouwe Loudon and Jonkvrouwe E. Loudon from The Hague. The building is located on a higher part of the site, to the north of the country house. By means of two garden walls against the left side facade (north-east) of the house running in north-east and north-west directions, a sheltered, square-shaped space has been created at the garage section.

Description

Freestanding service dwelling on rectangular ground plan, consisting of one storey under a hipped roof with sagging, covered with red (English) slate tiles in Maas bond. Heavy masonry chimneys in English style stand on the ridge ends. The roof dormers under steep dormer caps have two- and three-part window arrangements with glazing bars and are clad on the sides with slate tiles. The design and detailing of the architecture are broadly in line with those of the main building. The trash stone foundation of red facing bricks is capped with a mortar course. Above this, the side elevations are constructed of hard-grey hand-moulded brick (Utrecht format) in Flemish bond. Window and door openings are spanned by stone lintels. Red-fired tiles are applied for the water drips.

The majority of the single and compound window arrangements, including imitation cross windows, are executed with glazing bars. The doors are panelled doors. Below the wooden gutter moulding executed with gutter blocks is a decorative frieze with edge-set brickwork.

The street-facing front elevation (north-west) has an irregular layout with an entrance casement to the right of centre and to the left of it a door with fanlight. One window appears at each gable end. The right side elevation (south-west) has one window on the left in the facade with a double garage door beneath a concrete, white-painted lintel to the right, fitted with small panes. The left side elevation (north-east) has a panelled door on either side with two windows between them. The central section of the symmetrically arranged rear elevation (south-east) is accentuated by a triangular pediment with below it a heavy wooden canopy. Below this are two pairs of double garage doors with glazing bars. At both gable ends are small, two-pane windows placed high in the facade.

In the INTERIOR of the service dwelling, the original ground plan layout and detailing have been largely maintained.

Valuation

The coachhouse/garage with service dwelling dating from 1924 and belonging to the country house 'Coromote', is of general importance on account of its cultural and architectural-historical value:

- as a spatial, stylistic and functional component of the complex, built in analogy to historic country estates;

- on account of the specific typology, based on historic examples and the New Historicist building style and inspired by Dutch Classicism with influence from the English Country House Style, comparable to that of the country house;

Coachhouse/garage with service dwelling is virtually intact as regards main form, material use and detailing. Internally, amongst other things, the garage is still in its original condition.

Further important on account of its ensemble value as part of the complex 'Coromote' and on account of its visually distinctive location on the road and along the front square.
